I've just fitted a pair of these to my system (see below) so I thought I'd share my first impressions. The little things themselves are immaculately manufactured and presented - as you would hope. Slotting them into the system, the difference in volume is immediately noticeable. I can now turn my volume control past 9 o'clock without risking neighbourly annoyance, which is all to the good.

The result of this is that the slight low level channel imbalance which the Kandy pairing suffered from has been cured (which was my principle reason for trying these). I also had this issue with a previous amp / CD combo, so while I don't make any "Golden ears" claims for my hearing generally, I have come to the conclusion that my ears are quite sensitive to this aspect.

Sound otherwise seems to be unchanged, with the Kandys retaining their quite forward and weighty presentation. The amp, operating higher up its range, does seem to have a better grip on the sub however, and I suspect I'll need to retune this slightly as a result.

These were purchased from hificables, another fuss free and quickly delivered order from these guys.

Rothwell used to do a really good and relatively cheap valve power amplifier. Unfortunately that seems to have been discontinued, but the Indus passive preamp is still available. If you call them, you'll likely speak to Andrew Rothwell himself!
