hi!

i am building a new house and have a civil engineer (friend of mine) designing it , so i would like to have a large room downstairs dedicated to ... listening !

the room (still on paper or better autocad file) is 6.60metres long x 4.20metres wide (height being 3metres) ... i am sure i once had read some specific math formula that calculates listening room sizes... anyway, you think these dimensions (6.60x4.20) are proper for that purpose? (changing dimensions more than some cm for each side is impossible because by changing one dimension, everything changes) (thinking of placing speakers in both corners of one 4.20m wall , sit on sofa placed around mid of 6.60m sized dimension. etc.)

thank you.

Have a look at the what hifi video guides (available on this site). I wouldn't put the speakers directly in the corners, as it will boom madly. Probably best 0.6m from side walls and at least 0.3m from the rear wall.

The room specs look pretty good though. Put the sofa about 1.3m from the back wall and you are pretty much there...

I vaguely recall using the golden ratio for wall lengths should work best, but that academic if you have only a fewcm to play with. Those ratios look reasonable enough to me.

Google studio and listening room sound proofing and acoustic treatment techniques and get a decent mains spur or 2 planned whilst you're at the drawing stage.

I do think the sofa should go back a metre or so to avoid an overwide hole in the middle stereo image.

Read about speaker positioning too. The speakers may not be happy in the corners and might want room around them to avoid early wall reflections.

Is the kit for this audio palace selected already.

What luxury, to be designing a room for your kit. Most of us have to make the best of what we have. Enjoy it.
