Ripping my cds. to play through squeezebox to my Avi speakers

Hi all.

Well, the long awaited ADM AVI 9.1 speakers are here. I have 1000s of mp3s which sound good, but they definately vary in quality (and bitrate). However. Im after some advice on best audio quality for ripping.

I have ripped some of my collection to highest 320 bitrate mp3s using media monkey. I have tried FLAC with mediamonkey but the sound kept cutting out on playback with the squeezebox. (MM also had an option for how much to compress the FLAC. I dont know how much or if it should be compressed?)I thought maybe the cut outs were showing up a weak wireless signal as the mp3s would be sending less data?. But in fact, apple lossless plays ok. And earlier today so did a WAV file ripped by using EAC.

The Cds that we own that i want to rip. I think for now, I would like the best quality, especially to really be able to judge the speakers. Not really a problem with size, or being able to put on the ipod ( I have loads of mp3s for that)

Does what programme I use to rip make a difference to the quality, regardless of using the same format? And what programme and format would you use for the above?

You'll want to be ripping in lossless then... so choose from:

Apple lossless - iTunes

Windows media lossless - WMP

FLAC - rip with EAC, various options for playback. I use Foobar.

From what you've described above, it sounds like you'd be best off going with Apple, since that's what's working on your setup. Do different programmes produce produce different quality rips? Almost certainly yes. Can you hear the difference? Well, that's something you can decide for yourself.

Would agree that lossless is the way to go,if you use iTunes to rip in Apple lossless then you can always convert to a lower bit rate for use on the Ipod
