I have become, but am probably not the first, the victim of IMBIOB (I Must Buy It On Blu-ray) syndrome.
I have just purchased 'ABBA - The Movie' on Blu-ray. Now before a chorus of 'serves you right you sad old git' rings out, I should point out in my defence that it was under £15 from Amazon and so I thought it a fairly cheap way to add to my tiny Blu-ray library plus experience pop concert 5:1 surround for the first time.
Big mistake. Apart from the picture quality being no better than what a standard def. would look like through a good dvd player,(the movie is 1080i HD widescreen 16:9 and special features 480i standard def 4:3 .....WOW !), the much anticipated surround sound never happened. The audio track is LPCM 5:1 Surround Sound which my PS3 does recognise but me and my Sony Dav-is10 do not. Where was Dolby when all of this was going on?.
Far be it for me to become a cynic, but is it possible that manufacturers could start jumping on the bandwaggon and start issuing all their back catalogues on Blu-ray for premium prices but without any quality gain? The 'Harold Lloyd Definitive Collection' perhaps?
Ironically, my Legends Of Jazz Showcase Blu-ray does not play at all. Any suggestions?
I wonder if the same thing is happening in the HD DVD camp. Be very warned. The self same ABBA movie on HD DVD is £48 (Amazon)!!
