I read that review and felt it was the most glowing of Reviews I have ever seen for a TV from What Hi Fi and Video. You could feel the excitement of the authors bubbling on the surface.Did it even suggest it could draw blood from the Kuro? And is this new LED the TV to take the crown from the Kuro's unassailable dominance for nearly decade, finally? I think it is a worthy successor.

Dutch and not Japanese. How the tables have turned. And when a 50 inch version comes out how much will that be? 2.5k perhaps.

But with Sony,Pana, and Sumsung assault on the market with 3D, commonsense say hold off any 2D TV big purchases. So what's Philips 3D TV plans then? If they are pushing these expensive 2D LEDs are they creating a second front after when everyone has got there?

Buyers are going to think hard about parting their cash on this trail blazer of a 2D TV. It may be 'LED made perfect'

If only it came out in 2007. I wonder how his TV [LED] will do in such a crowded brand market and with 3D coming into the fray.Lack of sales could kill it off in the UK??

Well if you don't like plasma's, philips has long been the king anyway.

Let's hope lack of sales due to 3D because I would not mind picking one up cheap.

They have got a 46 inch one

The philips 46pfl9704 that might be a corker as well.

Group Test next month, we can see the philips hammer the competition, hopefully.

One thing that puzzled me was the 37inch PFL9604 my mag is downstairs, I will have to check was that it looked exactly the same as the 40pfl9704 even though it was a differnet model number?

Yes that was the model number 37pfl9604 price £1000, 40pfl9704 price £1800, that is quite a difference in price given they are both 5 star's.

One thing about tv's is that there seems to be more fixed pricing than in the past.

I had a look around and everyone's seem's to be selling for £1800.

Or:

Projector (£1,200)

Screen (£300)

Blu Ray player (£300)

Budget Receiver (£400)

Budget Speaker Package (£400)

I know which I'd spend my £2,600 on.

Yes, I am happy with it. I think it performs very well with dvd which is what I mainly watch on it. Blu ray performance, I think, is superb, however, you should read the what hifi review since they believe this aspect can be bettered on other sets, for the money. SD TV from my virgin box could be better on some channels, but I don't believe it performs badly here, by comparison with other sets.

My Xbox360 looks great on it even though it's only displaying 1080i (I have an old 360 without hdmi, and the v10 won't display 1080p via component).

The only minor complaint, was the lack of a 46" model, which made me choose the 42" (at 9-10ft viewing distance). I should maybe have gone for the 50".

I think I remember seeing the x4500, not sure of the size, displaying Ironman on BD, and that looked superb. Are you going to be able to demo them?

If I had to buy one today and just between the 37inch and 40inch philips even though I really want a quite a big tv, I might well go for the 37inch. £800 does seem excessive.

again , absolutely , if my budget allowed , id certainly consider a 9704 ,but with 3d looming , and the possibility of panasonic releasing a tv as good as the pioneer kuro (i did say possibility) that will also have 3d , id wait and see , if such a tv was 50inch , and under £2600 , which i guess it could be , i couldnt see why people would instead choose a 9704 , given the choice....

there was a difference between the 42 and 47 664 42 won tv of the year 47 got 4 stars?

i just read that , it appears they knocked the 47" 9664 for its price , compared to the 47" 7404 , which they say is nearly as good , a £600 price difference ..

yet the 42pfl9664 which got 5 stars at £1700 , before it came down to £1500 , is about £700-£800 more than the 42pfl7404 which they dont seem to have reviewed , so if my logic is correct , the 42pfl9664 should also have only got 4 stars , assuming the 42pfl7404 is as good as its bigger brother ???? shock horror , a 4 star tv has won whfis awards , hold the front page.....

Your logic is flawed, sadly - each size-class of set judged on its own criteria. At 40in, the Philips couldn't be beaten; at 46in the high-end Samsung pipped it.

i dont get it , the 40b8000 dont beat the 42in 9664 , even though
its £300 cheaper ,very close in performance , similar size , class ,
so price isnt relevant ??

but the 46b8000 beats the 47in 9664
thats £200 more expensive ,very close in performance , similar size ,
class , price is relevant ??

the only reason the 47in 9664
lost a star was because of its price in relation to a tv 47in 7404 that
ISNT as good ,similar size , different class , £600 cheaper , price is
very relevant ??
i is foncused....

Price is always relevant - we test everything on a value basis. But we felt the difference in performance for the 40in model merited the premium; different case at 46in.
