Hi,

I've been more than happy with the performance of my current Denon AVC-A1SE 7 channel processor/amplifier for both movies and music, but as it doesn't de-code the latest HD audio formats, I'm looking for a replacement 7.1 system

Obviously it needs to have HDMI connections and I usually like my kit to be as future facing as possible (as long as it's functionalities are something I would/likely to use)

I've been looking at the latest Onkyo PR-SC5508 pre-processor and partnering PA-MC5500 amplifier and I've been impressed with the reports of the accuracy/results of the Audyssey MultEQ® XT32 setp up (from the few reviews I can find that is)

Most higher-end pre/pro systems (or combined AV amplifiers come to that matter) don't cater for 1.4a 3D compatible HDMI connectors, but then again, I'm not sure I'll go down that route anyway.

Just to add, I have digitised all my music (FLAC) and DVD's (VOB) already and will stream these to whatever system I choose.

Would be good to hear other peoples thoughts and/or recommendations for the Onkyo or any other kit (sub £5k I guess)

Thanks, Ian

Hi Ian

Although you don't have to go for a pre/power, they tend to be far more up to date than the current crop of sub £5k integrated AV receivers/amplifiers, and the manufacturers of these don't seem too keen to keep them updated with any enhancements via software.

The Onkyo and Marantz pre/powers seem to be the main two within this price point, and will leave you with plenty of change from your budget too. The Onkyo may be a little more, but this has the benefits of THX and the Audyssey XT32 you mention, and while the Marantz may have the edge with music, the Onkyo, which is no slouch with music by the way, is by far one of the better options under £5k at this point.

Either one of these will drive a good quality pair of speakers, and will be a good step up from what you had too. I'd recommend you audition both, but if you can't, at least try the Onkyo. I think you'll be surprised how much things have moved on...

I too have the A1SE (Using Oppo BD83's decoder for HD audio) and have been eying up both the Onkyo and Marantz's. Have been leaning towards the Onkyo only thing I'd like to know is if they run hot like previous Onkyo's.
