hi there i bought 40" sony 1080 a while ago the next thing on my list is a decent surround sound reciever pref 7.1. I really had my heart set on the SONY STR DA1200ES at the time for all the obvious resons then came along sony str ga820 7.1 which i dont know to much about & the new ONKYO (the one for about £400). the thing that i like about the 1200ES is that it will go great with my t.v, the price has dropped (you can get it for about £250 now) its got auto calibration and its still as good now as it was 6 months ago. On the down side theirs the thing aboout the hi def decoding. Dont really know what to think of this? O and is it 7.1?

SONY str ga820 7.1 from what i can gather great little gadget with everything i want and it even does the hi def decoding thing.how would i compare this to the other two?

last but not least the ONKYO again from what ive read in WHAT HIFI this is the best in its class the only problem for me is its not got compatable looks or the auto calibration of the Sony should i really be botherd about this?

PLZ PLZ PLZ CAN YOU HELP MY HEAD IS IN PICKLE

The replacement for the 1200ES, the 2400ES, is due soon. Sony seem to be ironing out some bugs with the firmware but I believe the mag will be reviewing it soon so you might want to wait for that. The Denon 1909 is also supposed to be very good and won the recent supertest against the Onkyo. I believe that a lot of new receivers are being reviewed for the forthcoming awards issue so it might be worth waiting for that if you can. If you're buying purely for watching movies and tv, I don't think you can really go wrong either the Onkyo or the Denon.

STR-DG820 review here, Onkyo TX-SR606 review here.

Points worth noting:

The Onkyo has upscaling for standard-definition sources, the Sony hasn't.

The Onkyo does have automatic calibration.

The Sony has some issues when used with Sky+ HD or Sky+ boxes, in that it can't currently accept 5.1-channel audio via optical digital when the HDMI video connection, which only carries stereo audio, is also connected.

There's a fix on the way, but we don't have a timeframe for this yet.

The questions were already answered in the other thread so there wasn't really any need to start a new one. I haven't tested both, but having owned the 605 (the predecessor of the 606), I can vouch for its performance, especially with movies. However the Denon does just about edge it out in the group test and seems to offer better upscaling so if upscaling is important to you, it may be the one to go for.

Complete noob question but i'm seriously considering buying the sony dgr-820, my issue is i've seen a jamo 5'1 speaker package that would look great in the front room (very small speakers hence happy missus) but they're 6 ohms and the sony amp is 8 ohms, would these be happy enough together or am i effectively blowing my amp up before i've bought it?

Any info would be gratefully recieved chaps.
