Hi all,

Hope someone can help answer a question, or problem I'm having with my newly purchased sub.  I have an ONKYO 606 receiver and have it connected to the 608 with a QED performance subwoofer cable.  The problem I am having is that when the receiver is off, I can hear a hum comming from the sub when it is on, and when it is switched to auto and the receiver is off, there is a constant clicking, is this normal, or have I not set this up properly, my last sub was dead quiet, but this B&W is making strange noises.  Should I bring this back to the dealer as a defect?

 Thanks,

Jeff

Hi, Any answers on this?

I have a B&W 610 with the exact same issue. I have looked in to the source, and if I disconnect my SKY HD box from the mains, the humming is nearly gone (still there). But would like to know if anyone can solve this

Thanks,

TR

Perhaps it's an earthing issue? When the amp is off, and it's humming, try touching the RCA connection at the Sub end. I've had similar problems with my sub, but strangely only when I upgraded from my cheap sub-cable to a Chord Crimson. It's an on-going issue for me...

Just a thought guys, I think some sub cables are directional. Maybe you have it connected up with the cable the wrong way round. I could be wrong though.

Both my subs hum & i can tell you that ive tried everything to try & stop it but to no avail.

When i spoke to my retailer about it they just said it can be normal in some set ups however, i then contacted REL & they said it could be down to my mains etc but they did say i can be rest assured that it wont harm the subs in any way what so ever.

Ive lived with it for 10yrs now & it hasnt damaged my subs, if i do find it annoys me i just switch em off!

But normally forget to put them back on again..

Jase - how much "hum" do you get. On mine, there's an audible hum over the movie soundtrack at, say, 50% vol on the sub. When the amp is off, it's audible outside the room. Surely there must be a fix for this - it's a bit of a joke to pay so much for some kit for it to behave like that...

It sounds like your getting alot more hum than i am with your sub.

With mine its only very slight, when im just sat in my room reading etc i can "just" hear the hum but its not audible over a movie soundtrack.

You havnt got your sub turned up to loud have you big aura?

Hi,

Some of them are. In fact the QED Performance Subwoofer and the Chord Crimson are both directional. All that means though is the shield is only connected to the plug at one end, so that it doesn't form part of the signal path.

Hum is usually associated with a grounding problem. I've no idea what might cause the clicking sound. Neither of these is normal but certainly mains hum can be hard to fix. You could try an isolation transformer to fix the hum. Blue Jeans Cable do one for under £20 or you could spend even less on Amazon or at Maplin.
