@ bigboss. Your opinion seems to be that full HD on a 32" TV is simply not worth it, so why as WHF made the Philips 32PFL7404 it's best 32" TV of the Year, and says that the Sony 32V5500 should be on anyone's shortlist of two? You can't both be right!

We simply chose the best TVs; the resolution didn't come into it!

I've already heard from at least one TV manufacturer that they'll a) start Full HD sets at 19in next year and b) have hardly any HD Ready sets in their range - oddly enough, most of these larger, bargain TVs.

With the majority of flat-panel factories now geared up for Full HD panel production (and 3D to follow!), it may be a moot point before too long.

I have a 32 inch philips lcd and my blu ray picture is stunning and when what hi fi reviewed it they said the high definition pictures were also stunning.

I can confirm I am getting a better blu ray picture on my philips 32 inch lcd than my dad's 42 inch pioneer plasma, and all of my family and friends think so too.

Well that's what I would have thought but some people have a thing that anything less than 40" full HD isn't worth having. I disagree - subject to viewing distance of course - and cant wait for my Blu Ray!

Well I'll be finding out in the New Year. Couldn't afford a Blu Ray at the same time as buying my TV last week, but pretty confident I won't be disappointed!

You've taken my statement out of context. In the other thread, the OP wanted a 32 inch TV for £300-400 & was insisting on a full HD TV. You've got to be sensible if you're on a budget. With that budget, I'll prefer a HD ready TV of a reputed manufacturer than a full HD TV of a small brand.

The difference them is not much at such a small screen size, although there is a small difference.

That's fine, but wasn't explained in your replies that you were basing your opinion on budget sets which led to my confusion! Will have the comparison next month when I get my Blu Ray!

Yes, because there was no reason for me to explain this. The OP wasn't even interested in a TV which was £60 over his budget.

Although I must insist that the difference is quite small. Gel noted a difference between his 32-inch full HD & 42-inch HD ready mainly due to screen size, rather than HD ready vs full HD.

As Clare has mentioned, screen resolution was not the reason for those TVs to be highly recommended. The TVs are simply that good.

Hi Bigboss,

My philips 32 inch is only 1080i and my dad's pioneer plasma is 720p, I have also seen a panasonic 42inch 720p, and my philips is beating the lot on blu ray performance.

I'm sure you would notice a difference. The difference between a 720p & a 1080i/p is much more significant at sizes 40 inches & above, & you're comparing a 42-inch with a 32-inch TV.

A more interesting comparison would be a 42 inch full HD & a 32 inch HD ready TV.

I think the reason for them to make full HD TVs across the range, is for economies, & also as an advertising one-up. It's the same as a manufacturer claiming that its 15 megapixel camera is better than other manufacturer's 12 megapixel! You'll only notice a difference between them on extremely large prints (which are only produced commercially)!!

I am sure too that on a 42inch full hd picture on a 5 star philips the picture would be better than my philips 32 inch 1080i lcd.

I am very confident know that this guy is going to be 100% happy with his blu ray pictures.

Cheers

What is the quality of SD on your 32" Phillips compared with your friends 42" HD ready set?

It depends what 'quality' you're referring to; sit close enough to the Full HD TV and its extra resolution when playing Blu-rays will be apparant - the picture will be more detailed. The 42in Pioneer may beat it for upscaling standard-def TV though (less pixel to fill, plus better upscaler), or for contrast on movies, however.

As ever, buying from scratch/going up a screen-size is one thing - Full HD is primarily your choice; certainly for top-quality sets - but upgrading from an excellent HD Ready set is something else; only upgrade when you've seen and heard a demonstration yourself

Debatable. That's just a speculation. Yes, it will look better, simply because of the size, but the picture quality difference is very debatable.

The SD picture quality is excellent on both.

Interesting, because full HD sets can sometimes not have as good a quality SD as HD ready sets. That is why choosing can be so dam difficult. Trying to work out how much HD material you are going to watch, and how much SD you are going to look at.

Still, if Clare is right this argument may not be important much longer as all TV's will be full HD.
