The new Marantz NR1601 (title of your thread) offers a USB interface for your iPod that allows direct digital connectivity; it also has a new GUI that allows to you browse/select tracks on screen. Both of these are new to the '1601; sure the '1501 has basic iPod connectivity via cable/dock.

Thank you Clare. I am starting to complete my home theatre system and I am looking for an Amp. I have the Sony BDP-S360 and Q Acoustics Cinema Package speakers. Do you think the Marantz's NR1501 would be a very good amp for this set-up? My entertainment cabinet can only accommodate an amp less than 16 cm in height. My other option is Onkyo's TX-SR 578 but its height is 15 cm which only leaves 1cm clearance!

As we've tested neither the NR1501 or (yet) the NR1601, I can't comment on performance. There will be compromises due to the slimline format, but if that's all you've got room for, a separate receiver like the Marantz is bound to outperform your other option of a one-box home cinema solution.

Don't forget to shop around for deals on the Marantz if you do go for it - there are plenty around, and bound to be more now the 1st July price-drop has been announced

Help please..

This Marantz NR1501 is my only amp option because of space constrictions...

Now someone told me that my Q Acoustics cinema package speakers aren't good enough because our room is relatively large (15 feet by 20 feet) and the speakers have relatively low impedance (4-6 ohms) and quite inefficient (86db with 2.8v @1m).

Suggestions please???

Can I have your thoughts/opinion about this?

Thanks Andrew.

I am also considering getting Onkyo's TX-SR578 (height is 15 cm)...do you think 1 cm clearance is enough? Cheers

No. The manual says:

"Leave 20 cm (8") of free space at the top and sides and 10 cm (4") at the rear. The rear edge of the shelf or board above the apparatus shall be set 10 cm (4") away from the rear panel or wall, creating a flue-like gap for warm air to escape."

While that may be over-cautious, I'd suggest at least a 10cm gap above the unit, and adequate ventilation to the sides and rear. If using the receiver in a closed-back cabinet, you need to get closer to the manual's stated spacing.
