I heard that the next firmware upgrade for the PS3 will enable it to be compatible with 3D TV.

This move is the precursor to Sony rolling out 3D sets. It makes perfect sense. Games in 3D will roll out before BR disks

Sony have got a three prong co-ordinated attack plan on this market - from its own games division SCEE ,Bravia TV,PS3 console.

With Philips they must preponderous on this 3D issue?? With no 3D equipment announced or planned and with those '2D pixel perfect' pricey sets to shift. Sony can retool the current B3 range without launching another new range.

The irony must be that whilst the Philips 2D sets deliver that '3D realistic' but overprocessed look , it will

EDITED BY MODS

by real 3D sets costing much less.

No one could have guessed a year ago. 2010 will be the start of 3D TV year, many firms have been wrong footed in thinking 3D will be ten years away. For once the software companies and motion industry is setting the scenics. The Avatar blockbuster is the spark that sets the 3D chain reaction .

Wow....

No idea what that means, but I can't help but think you've bought the marketing hook, line and sinker. PS3 will be compatible with 3D games, but not 3D HD TV, AFAIK...

Do you honestly think Sony will stand still at BE3?? Sorry, but that just isn't going to happen. There will be no standing still. 2010 will be an exciting year and I expect that the new 2010 range in the Spring will re-define the brand and take the TV bull by the horns.

I also don't expect Philips will have any problems whatsoever selling its rather superb 2D sets. They have seriously upped their game over the last 12 months and I can't see them throwing all that hard work away. Neither can I see any of the other brands taking any onslaught lying down. Samsung will want to maintain their growing reputation, Panasonic are likely to push plasma further based on the Pioneer technology, and I'd be very inclined to see Toshiba and Sharp coming quickly up the inside in the coming months.

Exciting times indeed.

That'd be the 'growing reputation' that gives Samsung an 18.4% share of the global LCD TV market, LG 10.7% and Sony just 8.7%, would it?

Market share isn't the full story though is it Andrew? Ford have a bigger share of the global car market than Mercedes Benz, but I know which I'd rather have.

It's the only story that counts in terms of profitablity and long-term survival of a company. And you may have noticed that Sony's TV division hasn't exactly been on the top of its game in recent times...

But I have to agree with you: in terms of value for money, build quality and so on, right now I'd probably buy a Ford every time.

We'll see. I'm confident Sony will pull it out of the bag in 2010 and I think the developing partnership with Sharp can only help to spread development costs and make the range more profitable.

All credit to Samsung. They seem to have a knack for making product that people want at prices that people want to pay and, crucially, their marketing is very effective indeed. It would be interesting, however, to see how much return custom they get in the coming years. It is only anecdotal but we are already getting a lot of customers in wanting to upgrade from Samsung and LG panels for their second purchase.

Regardless, there is plenty of room for several brands at the top of the market and I can see Sony, amongst others, having plenty to say in the year ahead.
