Hi guys, looking for a bit of advise here not sure if this is the correct part of the forum but here we go. Just bought a PS3 and have been playing with the setting and am not sure what the best settings would be.

Just to be clear this is for game audio only, the HD audio for BDs works fine.

When i first setup the PS3 i set the audio through the optical lead and was surprised to see DTS not dolby digital on my amp (yamaha dsp ax763) but it sounded great so was not that bothered. I then setup the audio through the HDMI lead, i was then even more surprised to see PCM 7.1 on my amp, this also sounded great.

The games i was playing were both DD 5.1 not DTS or PCM so how can these show on my amp when the game is DD. Also which in theory is better.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Not sure on the first one except I can only assume the game is actually in DTS. It must be if the amp was decoding a DTS signal anyway...

On the second one, because you have your settings set to Linear PCM over HDMI for Blu-Rays, the PS3 is decoding the soundtrack and it's thus showing as PCM. This will happen no matter what soundtrack the game is in i.e. DTS, Dolby Digital or even if it's straight PCM as some games are.

If you're getting 7.1 PCM on the game, I would think this is the better option. Either way, changing the PS3 to bitstream game audio when playing games and then setting it to convert Blu-Ray audio to Linear PCM when watching Blu-Rays is a pain and not worth changing constantly if you ask me. There is a thread somewhere where I posted how to do it if you're interested, but I personally just stick with Linear PCM and be done with it.

Sorry, just noticed you have the Slim version meaning you probably aren't setting the PS3 to convert to Linear PCM for Blu-Rays. Interestingly, it looks like, for game audio, when using the HDMI to output sound, the PS3 decodes the soundtrack of all games to PCM no matter what setting you have for Blu-Rays. The only way to stop it is to setup the sound manually and untick all the boxes for outputting Linear PCM over HDMI so that it doesn't think it can output PCM. This could mean missing out on games (and Blu-Rays) with uncompressed PCM soundtracks though, so my advice is the same and just to leave it as is.

Hope this helps!

Well yes, but that's not to say all have uncompressed PCM soundtracks - most are still encoded in Dolby Digital and then decoded to form PCM by the PS3, but the original soundtrack has still been compressed during the Dolby Digital encoding process.

I was playing uncharted 2 when i started this thread, on the back of the box it says dolby digital, but when i used an opitical lead to output sound it showed as dts on my amp then through hdmi it was PCM. One thing for sure it does sound excellent either way so think i will just sit back and enjoy
