Hi there,

I've got a 40gb PS3 'fat' model which has bee as good as gold for 2 years however when the date problem occurred last weekend

another problem reared it's ugly head. Whatever disc I insert (CD,DVD,Blu-ray, game) is not recognized i.e. no relevant icon appears

in order to play the disc/game. All other facilities work fine. At first I thought a defunct laser was the most likely reason but surely

both lasers would'nt expire at once?

Anyone got any ideas? - especially the oracle of PS3, Professorhat.

Would it be worth fixing?

Any help gratefully received.

Thanks in anticipation.

Nothing immediately springs to mind other than it could be a failure of some shared component for the laser mechanism rather than both lasers going at once.

Just on my way out the door, I'll see if I can find anything tomorrow if you haven't got another reply by then.

A quick google found this video clip on how to carry out a repair yourself, that is if you can be bothered! PS3 faults are pretty common so whatever the diagnosis I'm sure there will be plenty of info out there on the net. My old 60GB PS3 died recently and Sony wanted £150 for a replacement refurbished model with no guarantee so I just bought the 250GB slim

Hi Daveee

Thanks for the link - I'll give it a go tomorrow and report back if it's successful.

Just be aware any warranty you may have will be void as soon as you pop the lid off and break the side seal on the PS3. There are loads of youtube vids on these repairs so if you do decide to tackle it find the right one first. Good luck.

Just a quick update. As the unit was well out of warranty I dismantled the player (must say impressively built) and cleaned the lens

but made no difference so went and bought a 250gb slim.

Just to really make my week though my brand new NAD sacd player has just done the same thing!!!!!

Fed up just does'nt cover it!

Thanks for all the help.

Hi Skiman,

I had exactly the same issue but Gamestation changed it under warranty ( 10 months old at time). They hadn't had a poorly PS3 before this though and thought it was very unusual.

Funny, mine is a 40Gb fat one too!

Sorry can't be of more use.
