My ps3 died after just 28months of life, went to sony centre in Malta and while entering the Playstation dealer, I was lots of Playatation older Models lying on the floor, they all seemed to be dead, I Told the Rep I had the Yellow light problem and he told me it is dead, and the only offer he could give me is to pay 175euros and get a new120gb PS3, as they will not be able to repair it, and if I tried to repair it elsewhere and then malfuncyioned they would not be able to repeat the offer. I took the offer and got my self a new one (Without the joypad).

But It has to be pointed out the irresponsabilty by Sony, the phat model seems to have a defect as much of the ps3 phat owners i know had to change it, one in particular had to change it after 15months as Sony in Malta give only a 1 year guarntee and he had to pay 175eu after 15 months after having bought it for 400eu.

All said and done the New Version of the ps3 is better sounding then the previous in my opinion as I set it to bitstream and The denon does a far better job in decoding the surround signals, though it is a much noisier machine and sems to be hotter, hope it lasts longer as i had a PS2 which was modified and still it lasted a whole 8years before breaking the laser, and in 2 years this is already the 2nd PS3.

Sony Shuld take more care................

All i can say is lucky you, i am now on my 3rd ps3. All have been the fat 60gb versions & i only play games no blu ray films on them as Sony took 5 weeks to return a game of mine after the 1st went down the toilet.

As mine were insured with their contunual play plan, i have not had to pay anything for replacements.

I have had a few friends with the new slimline versions going down too, one in less than a week so good luck.

This is really a shame for sony as the PS3 is a great product and the previous Playsation (1&2) where pretty reliable, it is really a bad thing for them, as they will be loosing more ground on competition. The PS is more expensive and that is mainly because of the brand, but that gave no re-assurance till now.

Hi,

I feel for you....a 10year lifecycle for the PS3 is what Sony spout out all the time but with the ammount failing already i would love to know just how many actually make the 10year cycle! After all the reports of failures i quickly upgraded to the slim when it came out just for peice of mind but i doubt my slim will last the 10year cycle either lol.

There seems to be a chance in the UK to get your PS3 replaced for free if you take the 10year life cycle line of argument and take it as far up the chain as possible but it's still hit and miss. If my slim ever dies that is the line of argument i will be taking but fingers crossed it never comes to that.

In malta there is only one dealer for sony, they give one year guarantee on PS3 tvs and all, I feel lucky enough they gave the console for half of what it usually cost, altough I really m not sure either if this will last longer as it gets far hotter and has much more limted space for air to go out and you cannot even keep it up right as it will surely fall in no time, and the noise is really annoyong when hot, the feel is somewhat chaeper then the other, hope it is just first impression.

The sound though blew me away compared to the LPCM output the Bitsream is handeled greatly by the denon, it get much more bass and sound has much more impact, that is the only point in favour, Till now.......................

I dont think the others were reliable either i had four of the ps1's & three of the ps2's as they all died with laser problems. I hasten to add overheating has always been a problem with them, causing dry joints, Warped & melted lasers.

I managed to adjust the laser on a couple of the ps2's as they went out of alignment, but they still gave out in the end.

It's a fact that i only buy them as game consoles, not for playing dvd's of any sort & only play a few hours a week, so it makes me a bit untrustworthy of the other Sony laser products.

Each for his experience I has The PS 1 which lasted for 6 years and the ps 2 just gave up after 9 years and both where modified to read copies, the PS3 was obviously in factory condition and lasted for a mere two, so till now my experience is worst on the third generation.

Sorry to hear you to had the same issue I had.

Personally I blame Watchdog :p. They covered the story of PS3's failing with the yellow light of death. I turned my PS3 on that night and bam out of no where it died. I was gutted, especially when I kept it clean using a dust blower and its sitting on a glass shelf so no way of overheating.

I ended up throwing it in the wee bin and bought a new one, I was more disappointed that I lost SACD Support but sound quality is better via bitstream.

I have always been a Sony supported/buyer, still am. But it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth.

I think you should challenge the retailer. The Sale of Goods Act covers you for up to 6 years.

Check this link:

Today's date

Dear Sir/Madam,

RE: Faulty goods and the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended)

On [date of purchase] I bought a [description of purchase] from you for [insert price] which has stopped working.

The problem is [enter description of fault].

The Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) states that when a consumer buys goods from a trader they must be: as described; of a satisfactory quality; and fit for any purpose made known at the time of sale to the seller.

This legislation also states that the seller, not the manufacturer, is legally obliged to sort out a problem if the goods do not meet these requirements.

The law also says I have six years from the date of purchase to claim damages for faulty goods.

My goods are not [delete as appropriate - as described/fit for purpose/of satisfactory quality] and I wish to claim a [delete as appropriate - repair/replacement/refund] of my goods under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 as amended.

Please respond to my complaint within 7 days from receipt of this letter.

Yours faithfully,

[your name]

bigboss It says this also in the sale of goods act & i quote:-

"If your goods are not satisfactory you may be able to make a claim for up to 6 years in England and Wales and 5 years in Scotland after the purchase of your goods, for a refund, repair or replacement."

Please note in the quote the words " YOU MAY BE ABLE TO MAKE A CLAIM FOR UP TO 6 YEARS ". This surely has to do also with the warranty given at the time of item purchase & with the ps3 in the UK it is 1 year, EU law covers 2 years i believe in some other countries. Also it says it does not affect you statutary rights.

BUT Sony knew about this problem quite early on & were replacing fat ps3's free of charge up until January 2009, after which they ceased, they said people were taking advantage of them. Not long after that they also removed the Continual Play program of insurance ( Run by legal & general ) for any new consoles. The insurance was supposed to be re-vamped, as they said this was also being abused. All the people that had taken out insurance could carry on paying into it & be covered, they have since not re-launched as far as i am aware. Lets also be fair about this Microsoft have had just as bad an experience with the Xbox 360, my nephew has had 3 of these break down & has now changed to the ps3 after having no luck with Xbox360 ( NO REFUNDS THERE EITHER ).

My 1st ps3 lasted 19 months ( Blu-Ray drive failure ), i took out my insurance when my first ps3 was 12 months old, i already knew about this fault with the fat ps3's. As you can guess by my handle i race f1 online with players from all over Europe & plenty have had faults similar, or the same as mine. Most of the old fat ps3's seemed to die after 18 months of age. My second fat 60gb ps3 only lasted 3 months ( Motherboard failure ) & the one i now have is 11 months old. I use mine for gaming only around 4-8 hours a week Max.

The claim for up to 6 years can also call into question fair use of the said item. Example - I use my ps3 then my son, daughter & its on for 6 hours playing games, after we all sit down & watch a film on it, virtually every other night. Is that classed as fair usage, getting on average 7 hours a day use?

You have to bear in mind that people can use it like a computer to browse the internet, play games, watch blu rays & dvd's so it is quite easy to hammer it. This makes sense for many, as it's the cheaper solution to buying loads of other kit.

So good luck if you want to claim againt the retailer or Sony

That Would be great for me too if i lived in the UK, the problem is I live in Malta, and i use it for games and Bluray only as i use a standalone dvd player for DVDs.

No, this DOES NOT have to do with the warranty you get at the time of purchase. This is a known problem with the PS3, so Sony cannot claim that it happened due to misuse. It costs nothing to write a letter to your retailer & only costs £25 to file a claim which will refunded to you by the retailer if you win the case.
