PS3 and 7.1?

Hi all,

I've got a PS3 Slim connected up to my STR-DN1010 which is 7.1

I don't use the PS3 for Blu-Ray (ever since the HD audio via 3D issue), so just use it for playing games.

For Blu-Ray you can obviously setup the audio to bitstream to the amp, but not for games.

I've seen an article that if I remove all PCM options in the audio settings it forces to send the signal via DTS or DD which does seem to work. If the PCMs are enabled, all game audio seems to be decoded on the PS3 and sent to the AMP via PCM.

Should this be the way I go, or should I disable the PCM options? Does this still allow for 7.1 (if there are ever games out there in 7.1 of course!).

Thanks

I think I may have answered my own question. I have indeed turned off all LPCM and the difference is pretty amazing. I've just played Super Stardust and it ran in DTS 5.1 and the quality difference is fantastic.

Still be interested to hear other peoples thoughts though! :)

try playing uncharted 2 - it has an uncompressed 7.1 lpcm soundtrack.

Indeed, it's a bit of a pain that the PS3 decodes automatically for games without giving you a choice and you've found the way to sort it.

However, as mentioned above, some games do come with uncompressed soundtracks (though the only one I know of for sure is Uncharted 2) and using this setting means you won't be getting the best audio from these games.
