Dear HT Gurus out there. After weeks of research I've finally narrowed down my AV room setup to be :

Onkyo 875 + PS3 + Dali Ikon 6 (5 spkrs) + Velodyne CHT-12R.

I plan to use this mostly for movies & gaming, music sometimes. Pls Pls let me know if this setup is ok, overkill or can be better.

Thank You in advance.

Rgds,
ronnt

Rgds,
ronnt How big is your room - hopefully fairly big - that will sound fantastic but might destroy a smallish room!!

ronnt88:err... room is 12'x10'x10'.Please tell me you mean metres? That is a massive room. If you mean feet, that system is way too big for it in my opinion.

Well, I have Onkyo 905 which is fantastic so I'm guessing the 875 is pretty close (if not the same) to it in sound from what I've read. PS3 is a great machine (assuming you're not just using it for Blu-Ray?). Not heard Dali's or Velodyne, but again, both have a great write up. So all look good individually, of course whether they all work as a whole is another matter and only a listen can answer that question.
I think what Gerrard was meaning was, you're spending a lot more than you have to for a room of that size. As long as you're happy with that, that's okay I guess, but unless you're buying a system you're intending to keep for 5-10 years and which can survive moving to a bigger spot, it's a bit of a waste in some ways...

Fair enough. I always tend to look at it from the other perspective i.e. buy what I need at the time. That way, if I move into a different room / circumstance, it's a nice excuse for an upgrade!

I think it sounds fine. The speakers are overkill for such a small room, but the more you spend on the electronics, the better quality you get, usually.

If you like the Dalis, then why not pick and mix the surround, and go a little smaller...

Ikon 5 front, Vokal 2 centre, and Ikon 1 rears...

That would sound awesome in that room, and IMO be small enough.
Dont go for the vokal 1 as its too small and weedy.
The 5s are terrific speakers, and a great compact floorstander for the size of room you are in) I also demoed them in my room 5m x 10 m and they sounded fantastic...

thanks frog... i'll make it a point to check out the ikon 5, v2 & I1 as recommended. if they worked fantastic in your big 5mx10m room, it should work for me... not likely to have such a big room in the next 5yrs so the system will be able to last at least that. cheers mate..

Just to clear up. I dem'd the 5s mainly as hifi speakers. I ended up with the 6s but it was close. The 5s sound belies their size (They are very wife-friendly).

I also have the vokal 2, but I stuck with my replaced 902sigs for rears when I upgraded, as in all honesty having the same brand is really unimportant for surrounds IMO.

Anyway it sounds great!

fair enough.. i'm really a newbie but so far i hear that as long as the speakers work for hi-fi, they work even better for home theater so.. should be good for me and my little room :)

this is very helpful and i appreciate it. thanks.

If you are happy with it, then you have no worries and if you move, extend and find yourself with a larger lounge - your set up will sound even better. Enjoy.
