Professional Displays vs. Consumer TVs

I became interested in this kind of comparison after reading the "Active Stereo Speakers Grouptest" in the latest WHF (Sept) issue. Active speakers such as the AE22 and the Tannoy Precision 8D, included in the review are intended for professional applications. Interestingly, What HiFi referred to the AE22s as "some of the best sub £1000 speakers you can buy, active or not". This made me wonder whether Professional Displays were of equal or better quality than ordinary consumer TVs available from High street retailers. It would be interesting to see WHF do a comparison in a forthcoming issue. Any thoughts?

I looked at professional displays, but the only range that I seriously considered (and indeed the only range that seems to be popular in any way in the 'enthusiast' market) was the Panasonic professional plasma series (PH/PF).

As with other 'pro' sets, they're not blessed with the best connectivity, they're not terribly user friendly, and obviously they don't have any form of sound output. They are, as befits their intended market, just monitors.

I still considered one though, as it'd be used with a recieiver, but then I read a few reports about screen burn with this range (which may no longer be an issue now) so decided to by a rear-pro

I'm back in the market for a flat panel now, but these sets are pretty pricy compared to the mass market stuff, so I think I'll avoid them again.

There's plenty of info about them on other forums though, and AV sales stock the Panasonic range if you want a looky.

I've had a look at another forum about this and a lot of people have said that the panasonic PH10 professional displays have better picture quality than their viera sets, more comprehensive calibration options and would make a better choice if a tuner or tv speakers are not required. They also make sense for custom installs because they are well suited to RS232 and IR controls. Has anyone had any experience using a professional display who would like to give their thoughts, particularly with regard to picture quality?

I agree that they're far better in certain ways, especially as far as calibration and set-up goes. For an 'enthusiast' user I'd say they're fantastic, and part of the appeal to me was spending many hours tinkering! As I mentioned, I'd have been using one with a recieiver, which would have been used for video switching, as I didn't fancy paying £100 per HDMI socket

I've used earlier models of these screens at work, though I didn't have much opportunity to run video through them as they were part of display units that had looped presentations and info on them. I've also seen a PH8 (I think) at an installer show-room, but I wasn't terribly impressed, I didn't think it offered much over the retail offerings. I had planned to see one of the 1080 screens, but then I changed my mind altogether!

A friend of mine had a PH9, but got shot of it for a Pioneer before I got to play with it!
