I have a PS3, Panasonic HD Ready TV and a Sony 7.1 surround sound amp with KEF eggs (set-up for 7.1 sound). When watching TV, SKY etc I can listen to the volumne at -37.5 and it sounds fine, fairly loud but not so much that the wife complains.

When I load a BluRay into the PS3, switch to the BD channel, I have to turn the volume up to at least -27.5 to hear the sound at a decent level (again I wish I could listen louder but wife and young children prevent this).

Is there a reason thevolume levels are always so low on DVD and BluRay?

Thanks

Andrew - I've been puzzled by this too (with DVD versus standard TV, versus DD broadcasts on HD TV (so presume it's even more pronounced with blu-ray)). Is it a case that as the relvant sound formats get more complex, there's more data to be powered by the amp, so there's a related demunition in volume?

I've turned up the relevant input levels on my machine - but that's caused a bit of hiss to come from the rear speakers, especially on 2.0 DVDs.

Also - but this is probably due to the fact that the speaker cables for the rear speakers currently run very close to each other - the sound from the rears (B&W 686s) is a bit, well, squally. Untwine-ing the speaker cables involves a bit of movement of furniture, so had planned to do it when the painters come next months, but wanted to know if anything else could be at fault?

Cheers

Garry
