Can someone more knowledgable than me tell me what I will get in terms of upscaling / resolution from this configuration: Arcam DV78 output through component connection / Sony KDL32 D3000. I take it the Sony can take a pure prog scan input. But at what resolution and will the TV upscale? If no upscaling will the image seem pixalated? Will the res be higher than my current 50hz Panny CRT (running a scart connection to the Arcam). Sorry for so many Q's, but I really need some clarity on this new fangled technology before I commit to buy the Sony TV :) Cheers.

Hi there, the Sony will take the component input from the Arcam DVD player and will upscale it to 720p so it can be displayed. The resolution will therefore be higher than if used with your CRT TV.

However, don't assume a higher resolution will mean the picture will be better. The upscaling process is working with the same information from the original source DVD as you get when displayed at standard resolution and some upscaling chips are better than others. I've no idea how good the Sony is at doing this, which is why you find a lot of people purchase a DVD player with its own upscaling chip and HDMI output as this often produces a better picture than using a standard DVD player and allowing the TV to upscale. Hopefully someone with knowledge on the Sony TV can clarify this for you, otherwise, it might be better to get a demo before you buy or allocate some money to upgrade your DVD player as well.

Thanks for the reply. The thing is for me that most of my DVD's are music concert ones and obviously music is THE Arcam thing, and it's my CD too. And they are not so cheap, so upgrading is a tough call (+ I don't want to by another standard DVD player - my next was going to be BluRay..).
The component outout of the Arcam is stella I'm reliably informed, so hopefully the Sony will do it justice. It's just such a lottery isn't it, as there is no way I can see of going into a shop with my Arcam and setting it all up to try with! I don't think Curry's will like that!

Fair enough on the upgrade, a decent Blu-Ray player will upscale your DVDs very well. Also, given that most of your DVDs are music ones, I'm guessing that the picture quality of the concerts isn't going to be a massive thing? I would have thought a progressive component picture from the Arcam would more than suit the needs for this.

Are there any independent AV shops close around your area that sell the Sony? You're right in that Currys et al are generally not that concerned about your business that they will accommodate a demo (though it's worth asking) whereas a small independent retailer will. You may also be surprised the deal the smaller retailer can provide, possibly matching Currys price and generally giving a much better service than you would receive at one of the bigger retailers.
