Positions for Receiver and DVD player???

I'm planning my first seperates surround sound system and thinking about receiver/DVD player position/location.

With a HiFi Seperates, you stack everything together, and the amp can sit in the middle somewhere.

I'm planning to get a Sony player and AV receiver, that are nicely the same width. Can I put them one on top of the other? Or, should I keep the receiver stand alone to be cooler? Most AV systems seperates seem to be far more spread out than HiFi’s, and I'm wondering why?

I'd say these are the fundamental basics of any electronics in a audio/video or hifi-system: place them separated from eachother, ideally on a dedicated shelf for each component. This will keep them from negatively interfering directly with eachother (less vibration and disturbance from one component to another) and will aid airflow (less chance of overheating). I shudder each time I see components stacked upon eachother. That is never a good thing. Unless its a system actually developed to be placed that way. Good luck with yours!

Components stacked on each other that restrict airflow are a problem, If you have two components with vents on the side that are stacked, but still have sufficient airflow around them, then this is not a problem.

As said by others here, try to keep the separate parts separated. Worse is that you appear to plan to put the receiver in the middle. That is a very bad idea, receivers tend to generate lots of heat. Although Class D amps (not sure about yours) generate less even they generate enough heat to never, ever validate stacking it between components.
