Dear Friends,

This is Sumit from Kolkata, India.

My system is as follows:-

1. TT - Rega RP3 with Nagaoka MP110.
2. Phono Pre - Cambridge Audio 551P.
3. CD Player - Marantz 5004
4. Int Amp - Cambridge Audio 651A.

I have planned to buy two floorstander for my system, according to my budget I have selected "Tannoy Mercury V4i, Polk Audio TSX440T, Boston Ac A360", which will be the best?????

I have already auditioned OLD version of V4 & found it's treble is edgy but the sound is open. New V4i is better according to reviews.
Tried Polk TSX440T, found loud & tight bass, treble is OK but Mid is not very good as Tannoy.Didn't tried Boston....
Guys please suggest....all links pasted here

Hi Sumit. Questions like yours often go unanswered on this forum because of several reasons.

Speakers themselves are a very difficult item to quantify as they will all sound slightly different to different listeners and are, of course, very dependent on positioning within a room. This is why I would always suggest people try to get a home audition. I am assuming this could be quite difficult for you to do.

Again not knowing what other speaker manufacturers are readily available to you at your location it is difficult to suggest other options.

I have heard the Boston Acoustics standmount speakers and they were very good indeed for the money. As such if their floorstands are of a similar nature then I would suggest they would be a good match for your current system and would suggest you go for these. Audition them first, if you can, obviously and bear in mind I have not actually heard their A360's.

Hope this, sort of, helps. :)

Hi there, I have tannoy v4s hooked up to an azur 651a and don't have and trouble with the treble, they didn't sound to great for first week but into the second week they really opend up and I cannot think of a better budget floorstander IMO

Might I suggest that the reason your system sounds balanced compared with the OP's experience with the Tannoys is your source. I used to have the Cambridge 640A amp, and although for the money it's a very capable bit of kit, it could be pushed into a harsh treble if partnered poorly. Some Marantz CD players I've heard have a similar tendency toward unearthing every bit of detail but again, could be a little too forward if not smoothed out by other components.

So your experience of Arcam (smooth) + Cambridge (forward) + Tannoys (balanced) = just about perfect

But the OP could find that Marantz (forward) + Cambridge (forward) + Tannoys (balanced) = very forward indeed

If you're really intent on floorstanders, I've heard good things about the Q Acoustics 2050's, but not sure if these are readily available from dealers near you.
