I know it depends on personal taste, but at 11,5 ft wich size do you recommend? 42, 46 or 50? Itºs mainly for tv and dvd.

Thanks

50 without a shadow of a doubt. That's what I have and I'm at 8-9 feet. Had a 42 and they look small and ordinary after a while. My 50 is still impressing me. Would I go bigger? No, not unless it's to buy a projector and that's a whole different type of experience. Different pros and cons. For a regular TV I'd buy a 50inch plasma.

Like Will I sit about 10ft from my 50"" and its a perfect size, not too big and not too small. I watch a varied mixture of both SD and HD.

Thanks. The problem here is my wife. She says it will be an intrusive object as the 50 inches is really a BIG tv. Also she says that for watching regular tv is kinda weird to look into such a big screen (watching the news for example).

What arguments do you have about this? I would love specially women to answer here (Clare please?)

My Wife came up with simular arguement when I wnated to upgrade to 50"" from our 42"" but I simply took the "once I have bought the set and it's at home there is little she can do about it" approach, but once hooked up and a few episodes of Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty in HD later (and a nice meal out to soften the blow) She is more than happy with those few extra inches (no pun intended

Let's face it, i'm hardly a typical woman when it comes to such matters, am I? I choose to sit a similar distance from an 80in projector screen!

But I may be able to help.... My Dad's going through the same arguments with my Mum re TV size: they're replacing an old 32in CRT with a 40in LCD - I advised Dad to get the measurements of both. Bingo! The 40in LCD is the same size.

Maybe by cutting a piece of card/paper to the same dimensions of the 50in set you have in mind, and sticking it where in the room you want it to go will show that it's really not that big at all - sounds a bit Blue Peter, but it could work.

Failing that, wax lyrical about how great her favourite shows are going to look - all the extra details, drama, richness....

My Mum likes the 50" Pioneer set my Dad bought. Mind you, it is wall mounted and can be unobtrusively folded back and tucked away into the corner, then pulled out at an angle when TV watching is required so maybe that's a good solution.

I have a 42" Pany plasma with the same viewing distance, for my eye's it's spot on. SD looks good from that distance and films still have that cinematic quality. A smaller tv will of course leave you more money for other toys.

You need to have a look at a few different sizes at your home viewing distance and see what you like. One word of warning is that your big new tv soon starts to shrink after a week or so. I went from a 32" crt to my 42"plasma and at 1st it seemed gigantic, after a week though you get used to it.
