Plasma or LCD?

Plasma definitely! No, seriously though, you might want to give people an idea of what your budget is, what size tv you want, whether you need or want Full HD or HD Ready etc

From what I've seen, at least at the £800-1500 price range, for tvs of about 40-42", I'd be happy with any of the technologies. I would quite happily have gone for a Sony W series lcd, a philips lcd, a Samsung LED-backlit LCD or a Plasma (which I went for).

I'm not sure there's that much in it between the technologies these days.

It all depends on which one suites your eyes / tastes. Personally i prefer the picture from a plasma tv. I cant stand LCD tv's.

Nobody can make this call for you. Plasma screens drive me mad (they seem to flicker like crazy to my eyes). I had to send one back and get an LCD, but this does not mean LCDs are better, they are just different and it does not mean I think plasmas are bad, I have just become aware that I cannot watch one without getting a headache (I have very sensitve eyes though). I had a 100Hz Loewe CRT for 8 and a half years and this made me intolerant of 'normal' 50Hz CRTs as well - can't watch em'.

I've got a 40" Samsung LCD that I paid £1400 for a few years ago and the picture in SD and HD is great. I went to test the new LED backlit Samsungs and some Bravias with a view to replacing my current one. After a few demos I couldn't find anything significantly better to justify spending the money at the moment. I think I'll just wait until something new and innovative comes out and catches my eye. Is there anything spectacular on the horizon?

after debating on a similar issue for months. it really does come down to a preference thing. i don't think you can say plasma is always best as LCD have made great leaps forward. I prefer the vibrant colours that LCD give but also prefer the blacks of plasma. By the way i settled for a plasma purely because of a budget factor and also that the sound was very good - as i don't have a home cinema.

As per most other replies I would say plasma.

I have just ordered a Panasonic 50" V10 for myself.

However before making this choice, I was 100% I would get another LCD. I did some research based on my viewing - viewing distance, type of viewing (sports, films etc etc), any gaming needed and budget.

The general view was plasma all the way and after reading how they work etc and how to best look at them I visited several shops to have a play. After this I was 100% on plasma. In shops LCD's nearly always look brighter and clearer than plasma but as everyone will tell you you are not going to be watching in a shop on a hi-def loop

Now when I look at a LCD they look soooo garish and unnatural.

Cant wait for the Panasonic to arrive now so the Samsung LCD can be demoted to the top floor spare room. Best bet is to see if you can find a helpful shop and assistant and watch both and make up your mind from there

ive just been given a brand new philips lcd to watch while my panny plasma is repaired ,(fair play to the shop) 37inch 1080p , only 50htz , quite a basic model , i suppose if i had went from my old sony rear projection lcd , straight to this , i would be happy enough , but after spinning a few blurays on my ps3 , compared to a plasma its not in the same ball park for me , very unatural look to skin tones , cartoonish even , the picture looks flat , no depth to it , no clouding though , im sure a top of the range lcd would look better , but its plasma all day for me , horses for courses ...

You really need to go and look at both types of TV yourself and make the choice based on what your eyes can see. Go to a good dealer and have a play with both types, take some DVDs along so that you can compare with source material that you know.

Don't forget you are paying for it and have got to live with it, but its what you are happy with at the end of the day not what someone else thinks you will be happy with.
