Hi everyone.. you've probably saw this question many a time but i'm not totally clued up on the electrical goods scene..(being honest, lol)

I'm looking to get a new Tv but not exactly sure what to go for Plasma or Lcd...

I would have to be buying a 42" upwards

I am a real gaming sort of guy so the tv would have to be very good for playing the 360 or Ps3 (probably the main reason why i'm wanting a new bigger Tv)

so what would ya'll recommend - Plasma or Lcd?? whats the difference??

obviously the Tv would need to be an excellent day to day user too..

any advice will be greatly appreciated..

Thanks!!

Personally, I'd suggest forgetting about the technology and buy the screen that you feel produces the best picture for the size and money. IMO picking a technology is narrowing down your choices unnecessarily. Just my opinion though.

Plasma is arguably better with fast motion which could affect gaming. I've got a plasma and not had any problems. They do get hot though, use more electricity, and are generally heavier and bigger than LCD's. LCD's have improved a lot over the last couple of years since I bought my tv. Compare a few at the store and look at the reviews in WHF.

Just look through the reviews at this site and you'll easily be able to shortlist a couple of sets for consideration. You need to look at the picture of plasma vs lcd to decide for yourself. Most people would immediately have a preference of one over the other because the pictures do look quite different.

In general, at your price range, you should be looking at Panasonic for plasma and Sony for LCD.

Personally, I prefer plasma as I think the pictures look more realistic but the screens are more reflective like the old CRT sets. LCD is pretty much like your computer screen.

Personally, I prefer plasma. But if you'll mainly be using it to play games then you might be better off with an LCD set. Image retention and the risk of screen burn are still concerns for plasma owners. If you take the time to set up a plasma properly and follow some simple precautions, you'll be fine. But if you don't want the hassle, go with LCD.

Personally I use Plasma and I play alot of games and never had any problem regarding screen burn but IMHO plasma wins over LCD where games are concerned mainly due to better response times giving far less image lag which can be the differance between getting in that head shot or not.

But you muct go and have a look at the sets in the flesh for yourself and try if poss to demo the set properly as IMHO looking at a set on the shop floor tells you diddly squat about how the TV will proform when you get it home.

At that price probably an LCD from either Sony, Samsung, philips or perhaps pioneer if you can find one heavily discounted if you can accept certain compromises they all have. The difference in black level and detail between plasmas and good LCD's is minimal at that price. I find the rather greyish screens of panasonic plasmas off-putting and they prevent true blacks from being shown anyway. Compare that with the screen of a sony or pioneer lcd (or a Kuro, just as another example) and you'll see what I mean. Even when switched on they often look more black than cheaper plasmas.

is that why hd test said yes the kuro was blacker than the panny but for it to be fairly noticable you'd have to put them in a blackout room together. view with the same feed and you will see plasmas are generally alot better than lcd's. (sony's lcd apparently the exception to the rule, although haven't viewed one so cannot comment) the lcds i viewed last year were brighter than plasmas (who cares) but the actual colour appeared jaded compared to the vivid pallette that the panny's and pio's had. that said whf acclaimed wonder sony had not been released at that time. as the new panny's are soon to be out view the panny's pz range you get a great deal with the new models out and unlike the one i bought (42pz85) which i am very happy with they now come with built in freesat tuners!(what more could you want)

ps games are quality on the plasma, the pann's are 24 fps so no worries with bluray judder!
