I recently purchased a AM Plasma Cleaner from Martin Dawes in Manchester. It's on of those with a non-alcohol spray and cleaning sponge built in to a metal container. The first time I used it I could not believe the apauling design. Having srayed the screen of my 43" Pioneer the sponge slipped accross the screen and totally ruined the screen as the sharp metal edge cut right in to the plasma screen. I've sent 3 emails to AM Products who are based in Denmark and they won't even send me a reply. My Pioneer cost me £2,500.00 and I'm gutted this has happened...it's ruined.

Does anyone have any sugestions how I should preceed ?

Sounds painful. One for the Danish version of Dom Littlewood. I don't know about overseas problems like this, are there no consumer rights groups you could contact? There must be something you can do after some research?

Thanks mark...yes I can actually my fingernail into the scratch...it's that wide and deep. The fault with the cleaner it it has sharp aluminium sides just cm's from the tip of the sponge and the fact that Pioneer plasmas have no protective glass over the screen.

Sorry to hear about this - its a terrible thing to happen. Have you tried complaining to Martin Dawes? They did sell it to you after all? My Halifax household contents insurance policy covers damage like this? Have you checked yours assuming you have one that is?

Failing that you could try Trading Standards because from what you're describing the product is unfit for purpose but I'm not sure legally where you stand.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thanks Distorted vision...I've just emailed Martin Dawes and await a reply. I have contents insurance but alas not for acciedental damage. I think Trading Standards are my next option, though I don't know if they can help as AM are based in Denmark. Really appreciate the input though!

I think the fact that the manufacturer is based in Denmark is irrelevant. You have rights as a consumer and the retailer has an obligation to supply goods which are fit for purpose. If you don't hear back from Martin Dawes call them and ask for the name of the Managing Director because you want to make a serious complaint in writing and write to him personally and send it Recorded Delivery.

If they are not responsive then I'd certainly write to your local Trading Standards office. I've had a lot of success with them in the past and they are always keep to help in my experience. They should be able to advise you on your legal position.

Well I'm not claiming to have all the answers or saying that Martin Dawes is definitely liable. There may be disclaimers who relinquish them of responsibility - I don't know. But he didn't slip the product did and it could still be argued it was unfit for purpose.

I highly recommend SafeClean Cleaning pad which is approved by the major manufacturers for cleaning LCDs and Plasmas: http://www.cleansafe.co.uk/. The cleaning fluid is alcohol free and leaves an anti-static, optically pure and water repellent film. Its also safe to use on screens with any special coatings.

Thats harsh hope you can get something sorted out keep us posted, I was apprehensive of even using sprays on my plasma so settled for two microfibre clothes one dry and the other slightly damp does the job very well

i use 2 bits of an old cotton t shirt, 1 slightly dampened to give the screen a wipe, the second dry to give it a good buff thats all you need, no need for gimmicky sprays or cleaners, hope you get your problem sorted though
