Undecided on plasma or lcd for my latest upgrade but what may swing it is the power consumption. In real terms how differnet is the cost of running one or the other?

Urban myth says that LCDs cause the birds to sing more sweetly and people on bicycles to randomly stop and embrace you in the street, while plasmas cause whole towns to be plunged into darkness and small children to burst into uncontrollable sobs when they are switched on.

However, most tests I've seen show that while peak power consumption on a plasma can be higher than that of an LCD of the same size, on average the difference between the two is relatively small.

LCDs have backlighting permanently illuminated when switched on, meaning more or less constant power consumption, whereas plasma consumption varies with the brightness of the scene being shown. Watch Ski Sunday or the Olympic beach volleyball, and they'll use a lot more power than when you're watching Sweeney Todd.

You can also reduce plasma power consumption by running the set at lower contrast and brightness settings than those in place out of the box - no bad thing for the picture, too.

So in absolute terms, LCDs just about squeak it on 'save cash, save the planet' terms - and I think most of us are becoming much more aware of the former, while the latter case is still to be proved - but there's not much in it.

There is also the fact that 99% of modern Plasmas also have a energy saving feature some where within the TV's MENU system which can be set to off, low, medium and max (depending upon who makes the TV) These settings will automatically lower Contrast etc to keep power usage down.

All a bit pointless worrying about Your TV's consumption if Your a running a Nice Big Amp for Your sound tho!

In average, one can say that 42" LCD will consume about 200 W, 42" FullHD plasma about 300W or more

Bit of a sweeping generalisation, but yes, turning a table lamp on or off will have about as much impact on your energy bill and, like, "the planet" as your choice of TV technology.
