Pioneer PQLS system

Dear WHF,

From what I can work out, PQLS (as on the VSX LX71 reviewed this month) is used for listening to CDs played on a bluray player using a HDMI cable (as the clock is upset by the 'jitter' when audio is delivered by HDMI). However all of the Pioneer bluray players, including the BDP51, have a 2-channel audio output for this very reason.

So is it worth spending the money on a PQLS amp as well, or simply using the standard 2-channel audio cable? Is the movie audio also improved by this PQLS?

Thanks

Rich

As far as I understand it, PQLS slaves the clock in the player to the clock in the receiver, to avoid timing errors between the two, and thus jitter. It appears to work for all disc types when a PQLS-capable player and receiver are connected together using HDMI.

As to how it compares with the two-channel analogue output from the player being used into the same receiver, I couldn't tell you, having not tried the two.

I would respectfully suggest this is something a good Pioneer dealer should be able to demonstrate to you before you make the decision whether or not a PQLS-capable receiver is worth buying.

Many thanks. Sounds like it might help the film audio as well then.

I will do as you suggest.

If you are using the VSX LX71 as your CD player then PQLS will improve the sound.

I have the previous generation DV-989AVi and VSX-AX5i and was so impressed by the i-link that I sold my Talk Hurricane 3 and AVI Lab amp (both WHF 5 star winners). IMHO the jitter free delivery of PQLS gives value for money purely as a Cd/Amp and everything else (Blueray,DVD playback,HDMI switching) that you would be getting would be a bonus.
