Hi,

I was thinking of splashing out on one of these babies in the near future before they run out of stock. However, I was just wondering if there was anything out there that beats it at the 2 grand mark, or will there be anything in the near future?

Cheers.

No, not in my opinion, some of the high end Panasonic professional plasmas get very close and there's plenty of reason to prefer them, but the VX100 will set you back a decent bit more than £2k. Next years Panasonic Vieras might reach the level of the 5090, but the lack of colour management system holds them back at the moment and we don't know where the black levels will be of course.

So at the moment I'd say get one, waiting a year might get you something of the same level, but it's one hell of a risk to take

After checking out the new competition at CES etc, Pioneer told us they were confident the Kuros wouldn't be surpassed in 2009 - a bold statement back in February, but correct to date, in our opinion.

However, they were equally confident it wouldn't take long - and seeing how close some manufacturers are coming to Kuro quality, i'd expect that to be in 2010.

But if I had £2K to buy a TV today, i'd buy a 5090....

Well, did some googling yesterday and you'll never guess but it seems there is a Kuro matching TV out there, not necessarily beating though, the Sharp 52XS1E, and guess what?, it's not a plasma, it's Sharp's top end LED backlit TV. It's not perfect, and if I'm honest it seems that the Kuro would be the better TV to my preference (still better motion, better processing and slightly more accurate colours) but it's been said by more than one reviewer that it's the best picture they've seen on a TV outside Pioneers 'future tech' room (which sounds like a place I want to be!) and Pioneers 'future tech' will never be released.

Oh, it'll set you back £9000 by the way

Hi Claire,

Did Pioneer by any chance elude by whom that might be? When in 2010 (early or late) do you think this will take place?

Hey ho.....i am just wondering if everybody thinks these tv's are actually any good!! What Hi-Fi are among only a handfull of people who think the sun shines from the rear end of these tv's. Which and myself included after seeing one running only agree that the blacks are very impressive but on the other front the other colours are rubbish...so unless you watch a lot of black n white programmes i wouldnt bother with one!!

ask any calibrator and they'll tell you Pioneer colours are really excellent, just as the director intended.

But if you've been brought up on a diet of overblown and garish LCDs, you might not like the Pioneer at all.

Manufacturers will preview their 2010 ranges at the CES show in early January - we'll be there and will report back on what looks promising. If TVs stick to their familiar schedules, we'll see new budget sets from late February, with higher-end models coming in a couple of months later. With it being a World Cup year, however, you may see more sets out earlier (ie pre-June!) in time for the tournament.

You'll find that the 5090 (or it's bigger brother the KRP 500) are reference level for pretty much every decent review site around, once calibrated the colours are as good as you can get from a set really and the Pure mode on the KRP-500 is the closest you can get a TV out of the box and gets stupidly close to the standards with nothing being done at all

Do you wander around the real world looking at things thinking "guh! That doesn't look anything as good as it does on my TV!"?

Real Life isn't day-glo. Open your eyes and look at the world around you, then go and look at a properly set up TV.

I am not going to argue with the experts and I'm sure the Pioneer tv's are currently the best there is in most peoples opinion but a tv is all down to preference and if I'm honest, I think I prefer the brighter picture that you get from an lcd tv as opposed to the darker tint you get with plasma's ... not sure if a brighter picture is how the tv is supposed to look but in my opinion it looks nicer - maybe because its what i'm used to? I always try and sell myself plasma's but everytime I see one they just look dull ... including the 5090.

Why would I stop reading a forum because of one idiot that's only made 7 posts here and who clearly doesn't have the faintest idea what he's talking about? I don't give a *** about your opinion because you're wrong and you're too stupid to realise that over-blown colours and brightness is not what a good TV picture is about.

And I'm not going to comment on Panasonics because I've never looked at one and that's not what this thread is about anyway.

Get the current best whilst you can. And PLEASE no Lousy Crystal Disaster...

As has been said, some Panasonic offerings come close, very close but do not as yet equal or better!

I don't know if you've seen some of the latest LCD's (that means liquid crystal display, by the way

). But even the WHF team profess that they're in many ways as good as a Kuro plasma. In some ways better- sharper and with more detail. If you've ever compared one next to a properly set-up high end LCD you'd notice the plasma looks quite soft, and the whites aren't white but bright grey. Especially if the room is not completely dark.

Everybody's entitled to thier own opinion and will have thier own prefferences. Let's not get upitty just because you own a plasma and don't want to be proven wrong about what LCD's are like. Lighten up and enjoy what you've got, who cares if someone else thinks you're wrong. If you're convinced yourself then you've got no reason to get upset at other peoples views.

And as for the current Panasonics, the one's i have seen are not very impressive at all. Even the current reviews reflect this. I was hoping they were going to be great myself, but after waiting months for the G15 to come out then seeing the picture, I decided against it.

Hi dweston84

The Pioneer's (once set up effectively) are pretty much the finest around at the moment and this will also probably be the case for the next year or so.

Thanks

I have, not one passes my tests regarding stauration, movement, artefacts, contrast, progresive single colour subtlety, ad nauseum. Reviews are one thing, living with a bodge is another.

It may be difficult to admit that one has bought 2nd best hence the protective dialogue, I maintain that the correct term is Lousy Crystal Disaster!

Whether you prefer Plasma or LCD is all personal. Plasmas a few years back did not impress me. However when i saw a Pioneer LX6090 my jaw hit the floor. They produce a picture which was the deepest I'd ever seen. I can see how people may like LCDs more (like people who prefer the compressed sound of 128k mp3 music....) but side by side, plasmas are for me! I doubt you'd regret the Pioneer :)
