I was just about to purchase the PDP-LX508 and have come across this model (PDP-LX5090) which I can only assume is the new 9 series. It was advertised on the web page of the store I was about to buy the LX508 from. So once again I've stalled at the last hurdle. I've scoured the web for a review on this but have came up with blanks. Is there an opinion out on this screen yet ? How does it compare to the LX508 ? Please help .......

According to Pioneer it has 5x the blacks of the pdp-508 and report said side by side you can clearly tell the difference in picture quality we need a test from whfi.

We should be receiving a PDP-LX5090 tomorrow - Friday at the latest.

You'll have to give us five minutes before asking what it's like, though...

Just checked my emails and the man from Pioneer has confirmed the PDP-LX5090 will be delivered to our test rooms tomorrow. And no, that doesn't mean we'll have tested it by lunchtime. But if I talk very, very nicely to Simon, he might let me have a look at it.

Suths:I was just about to purchase the PDP-LX508 and have come across this model (PDP-LX5090)... So once again I've stalled at the last hurdle.

Hey Suths you sound just like me! I've been holding off and holding off venturing into the flat screen arena for years, I've been putting up with a struggling Toshiba CRT. I'm off to a couple of dealers tomorrow where they have an LX5090 on display. Unfortunately their LX508D has been taken down to be sold as an ex-demo model so a side by side demo isn't available, boo hoo

There's not many LX508's knocking about so if you decide to go for one it may be possible to strike up a good deal?

I'll be buying the WHF mag to take a look at their review of the Panasonic PZ81B. That's the set I was considering until I persuaded myself AND my girlfriend to spend a little more.

I'm looking forward to a small snippet (pre-full review} from WHF to let us all know if the LX5090 blows the LX508 out the water.

Will this ninth generation be the last plasma panel Pioneer make themselves, aren't they switching suppliers next year?

Yes, the '9' series are the last plasmas Pioneer's making itself - its panels will be supplied from Panasonic from next year. No bad thing, being how good the Pana panels are, plus Pioneer's picture-processing expertise.

Thanks for all the replies. Well done Gearhunter, I know how much persuading the WAG's can take (present company excluded Claire, no offence intended) to get the finer things in life, but like you I managed the impossible and can stretch that bit extra to get a Pioneer. Any way, I'm not particularily bothered if you can submit a full review WHF, as after many years of reading your mag I've come to trust you with your judgement and my dosh. A simply yes or no would suffice. Please hurry ......

I spent over 3 hours in Sevenoaks in Manchester todayÿthe LX5090 was on the shop floor but even so the clarity was outstanding, the LX5090 is the business,ÿWOW! They did still have the LX508D fired up in their demo room so a side by side comparisson wasn't possible, not an issue though as I've made up my mind, I'm still going to get a LX5090 - it's the last panel Pioneer are going to make for goodness sake! Sevenoaks wouldn't budge on the price (£2500) at all but it does include a 5 year Pioneer backed warranty. I have enquired at Practical Hi-Fi, they could drop to £2300 but only a 3 year warranty there.ÿ

I was also looking for a cinema set-up and that's what swallowed a big chunk of my time. I auditioned the Onkyo SR-606 with Monitor Audio Radius speakers. It sounded great and looked great on the LX508D with Blu-ray supplied from a PS3! I then had a listen to an audio CD and this time it tended to sound a bit 'bright' and 'harsh.' I haven't read any reviews as yet on any of the gear I listened to today, that's my next step but a quick look into WHF shows it was a 5 star set-up all round. The dealer did point out the harshness is a 'quirk' of the Onkyo and did suggest alternatives but I ran out of time unfortunately, the dealer wasÿextremely helpful considering I turned up out of the blue,ÿfantasticÿexperience.

There's one question I've come out with after today and it's in respect of the sound. ÿThe guy at Sevenoaks did make some suggestions but I'll see what gets thrown at me from the forums... ÿ

What's the best way to remedy the harshness I experienced today when listening to audio CD's? ÿI wan't to keep my budget within the same ballpark, the Onkyo is £399 and theÿMonitorÿAudio Radius were £810 so £1209 all in. ÿSevenoaks said if I bought the LX5090 they could do a deal on the cinema package and wall bracket. ÿ

What do you suggest?ÿ

Gearhunter. Great minds thimk alike. I too am considering the Onkyo SR-606 but don't have as much to spend on speakers, and so am opting for the Q-Acoustic 1010i. I may even consider the Quad L-ite (but it only comes in Rosewood) but is a greatly discount package and comes in at the same price. Do you think it might not have been the Onkyo but the PS3, as the Audio Radius Av Packages are rated highly. I suppose you could opt for the SR875 as there could be some deals to be had due to the new models coming out. Either way well done for taking the plunge, its certainly a considered purchase for me, but think I'll kick myself if I don't get one. Any joy with the review WHF .....

Hey Suths, I'm pushing myself atempting to get the panel! I came away empty handed today because persuading my girlfriend is no easy task, she's not interested in the slightest and won't even come along to a demo! I have my work cut out, I think I'll sell my car, does anybody want to buy a Smart Brabus Roadster?ÿ

Getting back to the 'harshness', it wasn't caused by the PS3, (I'm not aware it can play audio CD's?) the CD was spun by a dedicated CD player but I failed to check the model as I was merely interested in seeing how the Onkyo and Monitor Audio set-up coped with music, not too impressive but I don't want to go down the route of the dedicated audio system, as yet. Although I do still have my old Pioneer A-400 amp in the loft, gathering dust, that could be dragged out again maybe.ÿ

The other thing that's maybe worth pointing out. I didn't audition the Monitor Audio Radius R270 AV-12 as reviewed in WHF. The speakers were a pair of R270's (stereoÿchannels), a pair of R45's (rear effects) and an R180 (centre). Because I have a REL Acoustics Q-150E knocking about at home (unused at theÿmoment) the guy at Sevenoaks partnered the MA's with a REL sub, it blended well and it was interesting to hear the difference when the sub was removed from the equation, both in music and cinema mode - a sub is a recommendedÿadditionÿto a system (unless you have massiv speakers but even then a sub can still addÿsomething. ÿ

WHF - how's the review of the LX5090 going?ÿ

If the 9 series Pioneers had a 42" option, as before, I would have gone for it but, as it stands, I went for the Panasonic TH42-PZ800. I was speaking to a guy from Munster Sounds who has just returned from Budapest for the launch of the Pioneers and he said that the set is amazing - even at the price he said it is excellent vfm. 50" screen though is just too big for my front room...

@Mark

Pioneer will be bringing out a 42" 1080p next year when they'll be sourcing their panels from Panasonic, possibility of a 46" too.

Out of interest, how does the PZ800 measure up to a KURO? I was initially considering the TH-46PZ800B but can only find it for £2k and felt spending an extra £500 on the 50" Pioneer was more justifiable. I'm still open to a 46PZ800 as this would free up funds for other things or reduce my overall spending - which would be slightly more palatable to my girlfriend. The annoying thing is though, there's no reviews of top line Panasonic panels anywhere.

How do you know this? Nothing is announced. They may well stick to the larger sizes, more profitable

It seems a logical progression, no? ÿThe abundance of Panasonic plasmas that will be available to Pioneer as of 2009, besides, I've heard things... ...ssssSSHHH!

Clare Newsome:Lots more testing to do yet, sadly, so you won't see a full review until early next week - but things seem to be shaping up rather nicely....

Intresting .Thanks .The reason for my intrest is that in the next few days i expect the 6090 which has a similar spec.

And i shall need all the help in the world to set up. keep up the good work.

Hi' Clare
I have already seen it in Selfridges oxford st for £2699 and they also had the £4599 lxd608 on display.I did notice that the picture was brighter, had more depth and colors seemed slightly better but i didn't see any improvment in black levels.Maybe just like the pana plasmas between the old and the new gen th not much difference.
But I am hopeful i am wrong.

I'd say you were wrong. Got mine on Monday and haven't had long to play with it, but its exceeding expectations. Saw it next to a 5080 and a fully calibrated panasonic in a darkened room and the improved black levels were clearly noticeable. Most pleasant surprise so far is SD broadcasts look great - this was a big worry to me as moving from my old 42" to 50" was going to highlight any short comings. Have tried a few dark dvds where my old plasma would just show blocking, but now I get no breakup and loads of detail. I think the WH review will be 5* shoe-in!
