The eye is naturally drawn to these big white marks when the rest of the screen is dark or watching a letterbox presentation - they have been driving me nuts. i can only assume that it is an uneven backlight issue. It has been taken in by richer sounds repair agents twice! they claim it is working within Pioneer's spec. To their credit Richer sounds do recognise that something is occurring and have offered me a repair model of similar age- do you think I should accept this offer? has anyone else experienced this problem? thanks everyone!

Hello alex,

That does sound like a backlight issue but is it across all sources? If it is then it sounds like the backlight if not then it could be a faulty cable or some sort of interference. I get a similar problem with my PS3 since i changed my TV, when i use the PS3 i get a white mark in the top right of my screen but with all other sources there is nothing which has lead me to beleive i have either a faulty cable or interference of some kind but i'm not sure what it is so i will be changing cables over etc tonight to see if it makes any difference. Have you tried changing cables etc to try to eliminate them from the problem?

I remember we had an uneven backlight on the first test model of Pioneer's LCD TVs we received - one of the reasons (along with its initial pricing) the set didn't get full marks from us.

I truly think that the backlight is the problem although Pioneer disagree that there is any fault!

Do you think Richer sounds offer of a replacement screen that has been used for repairs is fair?

Hi Alex,

Yes that definately sounds like a backlight issue then! And judging from the comment left by Clare i doubt you will be happy with the offer from Richer Sounds anyway no matter if it's fair or not. I had this exact problem with a 40W5500 i bought last year and in the end i went through 4 TV's until i got one that was reasonable but still suffering backlight problems, i couldn't live with it though and i have bought a new TV this year which is perfect.

If i learnt anything from that experience it's that i should have pressed harder to get the TV changed in the first place and that's what i suggest you aim for. The offer is not good to be honest, why would you accept a used screen as a replacement for a brand new one at the time of purchase? At the very least i would insist on a brand new replacement as i did when faced with this situation, but really if the problem is with the entire range of those TV's then i would want it changed completely for a brand new, entirely different tv that you can be reasonably sure won't suffer the same problem.

I feel for you, Sony told me exactly the same thing last year that there was no fault with mine or any of their tv's regarding backlight issues......yet google it and guess what you find? Plus it was widely reported in WHF! You have to remember you will be looking at the tv alot and if you aren't happy get it replaced but not with a used screen that simply is not good enough. How old is the tv? Is it under warranty atall?

cheers Oldboy, it's about 14 months old and i got a 5 year warranty on it which they are offering to transfer to the repair set. Ideally I'd like a brand new TV but i don't think they'll go for it.

Hello mate,

In that case i suggest you look at the warranty very carefully.....after 12months you have gone past the original manufacturers warranty and are now officially in choppy water lol. As it's Richer Sounds i very much dooubt there is some horrible disclaimer in there but best to check! I preume the warranty is with them and not pioneer or a 3rd party?

Richers have a very good reputation on the pages of these forums so i would suggest you go straight to the top with your concerns if the warranty is with them. I have just looked at the terms and conditions of their 5 year supercare warranty online and can confirm that the only obligation they have to you as a customer is to repair the tv, if they can't repair it the terms and conditions state that they will 'Give you a like-for-like replacement if we can't repair it.'

Now that sounds like ammunition to me....can you be clear on this, have they offered to repair it or have they just offered you that rubbish repaired tv? If they have just offered that repaired unit then they have broken the terms of their own agreement in my eyes (im not a legal expert) although it dosen't take much of a leap in faith to call that repaired tv they offered you as repairing YOUR tv.

As i said earlier, if that warranty is with Richers then don't go back to the store or deal with whoever you spoke to last time go straight to the top. I've been looking at Richers all morning for you (day off and nowt else to do lol) and they keep stating on the website that if you aren't happy or satisfied then get in touch and contact the founder himself Julian Richer so i will give you the details for you to get in touch with him :

Julian Richer,
[/b]Richer Sounds PLC,
Freepost SE5508,
[/b]London SE1 4BR

I presume you have tried the customer service number they quote on the website (0333 900 0094) and had no luck? My advice is don't give in as they are a good company and i'm sure someone will listen to your concerns but do try getting in touch with Julian even if it is by post, as at least you can get your point across to the man that matters, oh and btw they look at these very forum pages (many issues have been resolved on here with them) so say you have been on here and even quote the forum subject if you feel it may help!

Hope i have been of some help and sorry if this post got a little long, let me know how you get on and the very best of luck to you!

Hi Oldboy,

the guarantee is with Richer Sounds and as understand it the repair tv they are offering is the one they lend out to anyone whose tv is in for repair.

I have been dealing with customer services from the beginning but they have had the tv in twice and not fixed the problem (pioneer say it is working within spec).

as i understand it the offer of this repair unit comes from the director of the customer services division.

thanks for all your help. Alex

Hi I asked if i could have a new tv instead but they have only offered me credit of £399.95 stating that it is currently worth that and screens depreciate and technology has got cheaper. I paid £740!

It does not seem like a fair offer to me - a new Sony 32' such as the KDL32EX503 seems like a fair swap to me and that is £619.

what do you think?

cheers Alex

How can they say this TV is now worth £399.95 when there aren't any left to be sold! Fair enough if they were still in their shops at that price you couldn't argue. As they no longer stock these screens it seems to me someone has just pulled a random number out of the air. I'd insist on a like for like replacement (which they obviously can't do) When they point out a like for like replacement isn't available I'd insist that if they couldn't provide an identical new screen then only a full refund would be acceptable.

Put a post out for 6th.replicant he knows his stuff on the legality of this issue and has just successfully claimed a refund on a faulty Philips TV via trading standards. Maybe he would be kind enough to advise you. Good luck anyway.

As per EU law, you have the right for a refund or replacement. Amazon refunded the full amount when my Vaio laptop developed a fault after 18 months of use.

Hello again Alex,

That is just not acceptable i'm afraid! They are ripping you off to the tune of £340...definately NOT right. Time to go down the full refund route as by law you are entitled to it i beleive....as Big Boss pointed out via that handy link! I presume you feel the TV is not fit for purpose (would you say that is the case?).

All i can say is what i would do in your position and there is no way i would let them get away with this, it's alot of money to be out of pocket by and Richers can and should do much, much better than this insulting offer! I would be looking at legal avenues now and would start by getting an idea where you stand legally, don't worry it's not as bad as it sounds just start by going here for official advice by phone or online:

http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/

Oh and don't froget to drop a line to Julian Richer about this insulting offer! I am also of the opinion that they have not abided by the terms and conditions of the warranty as it states, as i said before, that if they can't fix it (which obviously they can't!) then they will give you a like for like replacement. They have not offered you that! And yes that Sony sounds like a fair replacement but by the terms and conditions of their own warranty they have to offer you a tv to the value of your original purchase and i would accept nothing less than that or a full refund.

Put that call out to 6th.replicant as Davee suggested and get as much advice as possible before you go back to Richers, if i can be of any more help just post on here but seriously that offer is total rubbish and i wouldn't accept it.
