When I got my BDP-51 last year, I assumed that the lack of sound options would be fixed with the eventual firmware upgrade. Finally applied the 1.38 upgrade but it still refuses to send anything other than DTS Mixdown to my amp (Denon 2307). The sound is OK but not as good as the one when I used to use the old digital coax signal I got from my Sony DVD . I miss being able to use the 'night' setting to boost the centre speaker for dialogue.

Is it because I have analog outs still connected that it wont do it? Its also not passing the audio along the HDMI cable to the TV, so I need to use the speakers rather than have the option of using my TV; I thought that pass through would work if the amp was on.

Anyone got it working?

How are you connecting your Blu-ray player to your amp? You need HDMI for Analoug out to get the full HD sound.

Plus in the settings you need to set the Pioneer to output to specific way you are connecting, ie: HDMI or Analog.

I have all three types of connection made; analogue (for FL, FR, C and SW - no position for rear surround in my room), digital coax and HDMI but the Pioneer resolutely says that it will not output anything other than the Dolby downmix. Have found a setting on my amp that means it is using the centre speaker again, but the volume is way down and it isn't passing through the sound to my Pioneer 427XD screen, so the amp has to be on.

Why does it have to be so complicated? None of this is covered in any of the manuals

Thats the general idea, the amp on & sound through your speakers & not though your tv, thats the way it works.

Ok, so what you need to do is the following:

Turn off TV sound.

On blu-ray player go into the Home menu and do the following:

Audio Out, set this to Analog

Then go into the speakers and set the Audio Output Mode to Multi-channel

In the speaker set-up change all the speakers to 'large', you may want to leave the surround channels as active, as this MAY make it sound better, but try it with then as 'no' to start.

You will then need to adjust the levels as you see fit, remembering that the subwoofer will most likly be 6db quieter than the other channels. (that's a whole other question)

Now you bluray player is set to go.

Now set your Denon amp to the multi-channel input and you should be up and running.

Final thing is when you put in a bluray go into the tools menu and select Audio and ensure you select the HD format, once the movie is playing.

Hope that helps?

BTW: I have assumed you have checked the software number and the upgarde did happen?
