Pioneer A-400 Upgrades available?

Hi

Does anyone know how I can upgrade my Pioneer A-400 ? Tried to look for upgrades for it on the net, but no luck. Any links or ideas?

Tom Evans used to do a upgrade for the A400 back in the day when it was still in production so maybe worth you contancting him.

Thanks for the Idea! I just spoke to Tom Evans over the telephone, he said the Pioneer A-300R are better to mod. However A-400 mod's are not available....

I will suggest that you leave your Pioneer A-400 unmodified as it is already a superb amplifier. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

whilst Rick is correct in saying that the A400 unmodified is a great amp, it is equally true that a modified A400 is a stunning amp.
I have an A400GTE (an A400 modified by Tom Evans(back in the day when he has modding them)). I have also carried out further mods myself to great effect.
I also have an unmodded A400 and whilst they share a similar tonal signature the modded amp really is something to behold. The sonic improvements i have received for the small financial outlay to carry out the mods are incredible.
Some mods you can try include:
replace the captive mains lead with an aftermarket one
replace the PSU capacitors with some new quality caps such as Mundorfs
remove and bypass the input selector relay(only do this if you can live with one input)
goodluck and remember there are specialist forums for DIY modders out there where you will be able to find more detailed info on this subject.

I have heard various modified A-400's over the years and whilst they all sound good however ultimately for me they loose the sheer overall grip and impact of the original design.

You are more than welcome to visit however i just thought i would let you know the A-400GTE is an amplifier i have listened to however i still prefer the original unmodified A-400.
