Hello all. I find myself in the position of looking to buy a new TV soon and for once pleasing the other half is NOT an issue (that's part of the reason I'm looking for a new TV). I'm just wanting to know if the new Philips 40PFL9704 or 37PFL9604 are worth the rather high prices been asked. I'm aware these are quite new sets, but if anyone happens to have bought one yet, I'd love to hear your comments. I know the mag reviewers seem to like them, so I'm pretty hopeful they won't dissapoint. I've currently got a 37" Samsung LCD (I forget the exact model number, but it's the one with the red bezel) and have been very happy with it, but I couldn't really afford anything more expensive when I got it, so I'm hoping the performance on the Philips sets is way better in all departments. Sorry, I've gone on a bit, any replies welcome. Ta.

The 9704 is a good step up from the 9604. If I were buying a 40" set right now the Philips would be top of my list. We have our 9704 running in store and the picture quality is very strong - certainly the best LCD screen I have seen or at least on a par with the X4500 Sony.

Black levels are very strong, the colour is not forced and there is almost no noise in the picture. To me the 9704 is a serious step up from the 9664.

if your staying at 40-42" then the 9704 seems to be the best of the current bunch , but if you could accomodate a 50" tv , it might be worth waiting for a few months , to see what the various 2010 models have to offer..

some of the boffins that developed the worlds best tv , the pioneer kuro , have now moved to panasonic , and their next high end range of plasmas may be as good as the kuro , with the nice added benefit of being 3d also, should that be the case , and the price of such tvs was around the same as the philips , would you be kicking yourself in 6 months ???

The 9704 is certainly the best picture i have ever seen from a LCD but if i were you i would hold back for 6 months as 3D is coming in a big way and the 9704 is not 3D compatiable meaning in 12 months your £1800 TV might be a bit outdated!

Hi,

While 3DTV is being introduced and added as a feature to new sets/BD players/SKY, the content is not there to support it. If you intend to watch Avatar, Up, Toy Story 3D and nothing else for the next while, then no problem I'd advise buying a 3D capable TV.

Buy one now with no 3D ability and it won't be ruled 'obselete' until 3D is the norm. Or the next 'big' thing comes along...

Buy what you want now - if you MUST be an early adopter or if the latest features do float your boat, then wait for the new line up of TV's.

Cheers,

Cofnchtr.

That's why I like LED/LCD's no picture noise.

Indeed.

The technology behind the panel is not the major factor in picture noise. The vast majority of screens available today still suffer from picture noise be it plasma, LCD or LED lit LCD.

On the scale of noise the 9704 is very very good but that is more to do with the procesing involved rather than the backlight.

after so many comments on the 9664 , re. motion issues . smearing , etc , i wouldnt be buying a 9704 until i was happy it was reliable , it seems the more processing thats in a tv these days the more potential there is for problems ...

Thanks for all your comments, guys (though keep 'em coming if anyone has any other opinions). One thing I'm not at all bothered about yet is 3D. I reckon this won't become anything like widespread until I'm buying my next TV. Right.. all I need to do now is sort out an amp, speakers and cabling... Hey ho.

With all due respect, absolute cobblers.

How would you describe picture noise?

Thanks

Hi Maxflinn, I think there will always be comment's like these, it terms of reliability know, I don't think you could get much more reliable than that philips 40 inch.

i see some of the posts re. the 9664 issues were from people that just didnt have it set up correctly , and a few that had problematic sets , with the 9704 likely to be more complex and have even more settings , i wonder how many buyers will actually end up with a picture their happy with , soooo much processing , im not sure id be comfortable with that .

the kuro was complex too , but ive yet to hear of an unhappy owner , or any problems of note , dont get me wrong , if a 46pfl9704 was £1500 , maybe id buy one , but its more expensive than a kuro , and smaller , so in my book , it has to be better , or as good , with the same build quality , lack of issues , we will see ...

It's not unusual for philips tv's to have lot's of processing on I meant, going back, Pixel plus etc.

gel:How would you describe picture noise?

I think given your bizarre statement re LED/LCD TVs not having any, you should define your terms of reference, rather than asking me to do so.

That's why I was asking you? in case I was thinking of something different.

I alway's associate it with a slight buzzing coming from the screen.

Is that right?

Thanks

Why don't they just call it something different?

Noise can be very misleading.

If I ever doubted that you were just a supreme wind-up, now I have no doubt whatsoever.

Please try very hard not to offer others on here advice; some of them might take it seriously.

I dont know about other people experiences but 3 sets of 9704, which I auditioned personally in three different shops all had pinkish colour and visual side-to-side comparison with 9664 set did not show any visible differences with regards to blacks, shades and so on.

One thing for sure those rosy tint was clearly visible and looked quite unnatural in comparison to 9664 and Sony(s) standing around.

Any comment from the editors? Or this will be usual issue of using different settings here and there?
