I am thinking of buying the Philips 42PFL7404 LCD TV, it looked good in the shop to my untrained eye but now I am looking on-line to see what the reviews say but unfortunately I can't find that many.

Has WHF reviewed it? Does anyone own one, if so, what do you think?

thanks

Currently reviewing the Philips 42PFL9664, which will be in our October issue Supertest, published next month (yes, really!). Not sure when we'll be getting the PFL7404, but you can discover more about the 9664 in our News video.

Hi Stimac, I've had one of these sets for over a month now and I must tell you that the picture is fantastic. The sharpness and motion are spot on, a million miles from my former Sharp...

The picture is very natural and accurate, not like Sony sets where I feel they tend to add something that isn't there to make the picture stand out 'pop'. There are ways of setting the picture up quickly, which I used when I first had the set, they are fine but to get the best out of it you will need to sit down and go through the settings. The picture will improve over a couple of weeks, mine did, may be it was just the TV burning in? I have hooked up a Philips BDP7300 Blu-ray player to it and have set up the picture using one of the THX calibration set up found on some Blu-rays. This has been a big help and has made a great deal of difference to the already good quality of the picture. The only area in the set up where I'm lost is with the tint settings.. maybe someone reading this could tell me what each of the advanced tint settings does and how to use them, as I think that there is a small degree of 'green' to the picture.

On a negative note or two, my BT V-Box seems to cause the TV some problems via HDMI, I get an error message on the screen each time 'HDCP error?' (may be wrong with the actual letters there!). And the final issue is that I'm sure that there is a vertical dark patch about two fifths into the screen on the left hand side, it isn't always there and having calibrated the set, seem to have gone. I have reported this to Philips who are prepared to 'repair' the set but will need to take it away for several weeks, which is unacceptable, I may contact the supplier if the patch gets worse.

Please don't let the last comment put you off as this is a top set that I can recommend.
