John Lewis have just told that this model (Philips 42PES0001D) can no longer be supplied. Please could someone advise if the model has now been superceded as it has received rave reviews in the magazine?

Philips is having a bit of a change of of retail distribution, pulling models out of various chains, But its sticking with JL, so it could just be that they're out of stock, and new models are on the way, albeit in a few months time.

However, you should be able to buy the TV on Amazon if JL can't supply...

Thank you Andrew. JL said that they would not be getting any more which I find strange as the model only came out in October. It is currently still shown on P's web site, but it is not in the 2009 model line up reported in news in February.

I wanted a TV with a silver surround (which seems almost unobtainable now), but still with a good picture on both Standard and HiDef, which your report on the PES said was very good. Unfortunatly I don't like the new Phillips models which have Ambilight. Having seen it in the flesh I find it quite distracting.

Any ideas please?

I'm pretty sure you can turn Ambilight off if you don't like it. And having seen Philips only yesterday, they've confirmed that the 42PES001 will continue for a few more months before the new models arrive.

FYI, they're now focussing their distribution on John Lewis, Amazon, Tesco, Marks and Spencer, Littlewoods and their own independent dealers rather than the big electrical multiple stores.

If you have trouble finding one, I'd suggest calling Philips on 0870 9009070.

You can turn the Ambilight off on my 32PFL9632D but the TV does feel a bit naked without... Once you've set it up and played around with it (slow / fast transitions of light) you might grow quite fond of it!

Thank you Andy for the information. Phillips have a rep on the floor at JL's, and (presumably) it was he who emailed me advising that they cannot get the PES model any more as I gave him my email when I was in 3 weeks ago. What is the closest replacement please in the new model line up?

As I said above, it seems to be the vogue that all the sets are black which will not meet approval of her in doors.
