OK, heres the rub - if sony made a 37" version then I'd be a happy man. 40" is too big according to the GLW, so my choice is either the Panny 37" plasma or the Sony 32"LCD. Assuming the sony has a more detailed picture than the Panny and my viewing distance is 10'- 12' will I notice the difference in picture quality? Or - should i be considering something else in the 37" range. I will mostly be watching Digital TV from Sky and DVDs although I will be upgrading to the Panasonic BP30 blu-ray in the next couple of months. Thanks people.

At your viewing distance you could easily consider a 42" or 46" (some would say 50" wouldnt be too big)

If you want a 37", then at that distance, there's no point in chosing a Full HD, so the 37PX80 would be a great choice. .

Thanks for the reply. I personally would go for a 40" but she who must be obeyed will not go for that. Or would she? - maybe a shopping trip would swing it for me - everyone has their price!

From what I can remember when I was choosing my TV the difference in bezel design actually meant that there was only a couple of mm difference in width between the 37PX80 and a 40 inch Sony LCD. (Went for the PX80 as I thought it was the better television)

Cheers. So you bought the PX80 then, do you have any issues that you are not happy with? Most owners reviews have been great about the picture, but a mixed bag about the sound.

I've got the 37px80 and sit at the same distance from the screen and, IMHO, it soon 'shrinks'. I only bought it as an interim measure and planned to get the next Best Buy in the 40'' reviews.

I'll prob be looking at 42-46'' instead as I really feel I don't get the cinematic experience I'd wanted on this size screen. The tv is great (I've put the next purchase on hold because of this) and you wouldn't regret the purchase but size does matter.

Get a 40'' screen (at least) and the wingeing will subside in a couple of weeks as the tv fades into the background....ish. (Maybe put a 37'' sticker on it ?)

Which model is a different matter though.

Fantastic!! I'm liking the 37" sticker idea! That could work!!

I could think of a few other ideas for a 37" sticker!! LOL

The sound is pretty average, a lot will depend on what you are used to. It's OK for day to day viewing but I listen to most stuff via my home cinema system

The picture can be quite amazing, but there are one or two little niggles. I sometimes experience some of the picture judder that Stringerbell alludes to in another thread today (haven't had time to respond to that yet) and also occassionaly a slight greening around the edge of HD moving objects, particularly if they are white. I haven't had a chance to really analize these issues and it may well be that my input sources and picture settings that are to blame. I'm also not convinced that the picture geometry is not slightly vertically stretched when in wide mode. At the price I don't think it can be beaten, but I would advise you to audition it very thoroughly with a variety of sources to see if it satisfies your rquirements.

Haven't experienced any of the probs tvmog noted although the sound is 'average'.

I only have a basic set up (onk 606, Mission Mcubes, PS3, Virgin SD ) but the pic looks very good (Virgin being the odd exception) and the sound is perfect for my requirements.

For the money (the whole system cost less than 1600 quid) I'm more than happy and the Panny really surprised me.

I doubt the 37'' sticker would work on that

but, as long as the box is hidden, few women would bother to measure a tv.

I am yet to SEE/HEAR any Flat pannel TV being of either a Plasma or LCD that actually produced a decent sound compared to those of thier old CRT cousins. This is IMHO due to the actual design and placement of the speakers on the modern flat panel TV's as these THIN elongated speakers just dont seam to be able to match the depth of sound that the more traditional speakers found in CRT sets produced, and more often than not end up producing a much more weightless tin like sound, hence why just so many people now have a seperate sound system of varying sizes.

As for the choice in which TV to actually buy, for Me at any screen size of 37"" and above it is quite simple, PLASMA!

What you need to do is put masking tape on the wall that is the same size as the 37". Let her get used to it, but gradually make it larger each day by a cm. When you get to the 42" size, she will be none the wiser and you will be able to get a bigger tv without her noticing. Sorted. Just remember to hide the box before she sees it!

Thanks one and all for your comments - a shopping trip at JL on saturday did the trick. A quick trip around the ladies dept to soften the blow and then in for the kill to the TV dept. A 37" and 40" were next to each other and the size difference was about a few cms. So now all I need to do is sniff out the best deal - 40" here I come!!
