Hi Andy

Any idea when you're getting the 40" samsung b750 or samsung b6000.

would be good to see g10 vs these.

Good to see that the team survived looking into the vortex of infinitie blacks and come out unscathed. Are the SD images on this full HD set comparable to those on the TH-P42X10, or does the less expensive HD ready set still represent a better option for watching primarily SD?

hi,

Whf team - how far do you sit when testing the tv, for dvd, sd tv, and hd sources. Does the distance differ depending on the source.

Iïm thinking of buying a v10 (which I know you havenït seen yet) - do you if the g10, or panasonics in general, have a headphone connection. Unfortuneately I live in a flat and will have to use headphones at night - so no surround sound system for me.

Thanks

The official word from the test team is that's there's really not much in it when it comes to SD viewing. Panasonics generally, and the X10 and G10 in particular, have very good Freeview tuners so neither will disappoint.

We generally sit the same distance from the screen whatever the source material, but the bigger the screen the further back you'll need to be. For more hints and tips on the optimum distance to sit from your screen, watch our 'How to get the best from your TV' video.

The Pioneers still have noticeably better blacks than the G10.

All the Panasonic sets have a headphone socket with its own independent volume control (from the tv speakers). On the G10 it is on the side.

Apart from the the styling, the G10 is a big step forward from the PZ81.

Alsina, despite repeated requests, you're still not declaring your trader status...

Hi,

Was this the finding of the WHF testing team - how much better in blacks is the Pioneer G9 over the Panny G10 - is there a noticeable difference? How much of an improvement is there over last years models? I assume the Panny G10 will not be able to match the SD performance of the G9 Kuro?

Hello Andrew,

I have few questions:

1. What could be the best picture settings for this TV (P42G10) in picture mode (s) other than the THX mode? I am from India and here Panasonic has launched this model without the THX certification. However the Indian model does allow tweaking the white balance and gamma controls.

2. Can I control the upscaling/upconversion (if at all that happens) in this TV. Because my current DTH TataSky broadcasts in SD (576i) MPEG-2 format which when fed through component to my P42G10 doesn't look very nice. I feel upconverting/upscaling the 576i to native resolution of this TV (1080p) makes the picture lose out sharpness, etc.

3. Alternately can I use my Denon 2309 to feed the satellite TV signals to the plasma. However my satellite set-up box has only component out(no HDMI). In that event feeding the Denon with satellite tv through component (576i) will output only through s-video to the plasma (Denon upconvert shortcoming). Now will I really benefit with this processed output? I am not sure how much resolution s-video supports? Will it be 576i component --> 720p s-video? If so, the picture on the plasma will be much much better. But I am not sure about s-video output resolution.

Thanks for your advice.

The UK and European G10s don't have a THX mode either. The THX option is reserved for the V10 models, which are the next step up the Panasonic TV range. I find the best (and most stable) picture is offered using the 'cinema' mode: contrast at roughly 60%; Brightness at around 45%; colour at just under 50; and sharpness two clicks from the highest setting. Turn all other picture 'enhancement' features off -- noise reduction, and the intelligent frame creation option, which doesn't really seem to improve the picture, but can make motion look a little bit strange, on occasion.

Of course, different viewing conditions produce different results, but you can use a THX optimiser on, say, a Disney DVD/Blu Ray and see how you get on. Eventually you'll stop obsessing over tweaking the picture and enjoy watching what is an excellent television.

Thanks for the advice. I shall check with settings as proposed. I fully agree with your observations on NR and the 600hz sub-field feature........they do not seem to improve things much, atleast while watching SD. But while recommending switching off picture enhancement features, do you think the "colour management" should also be turned off? Because on some website reviews on P50G10 it was recommended to turn off the colour management (ofcourse those models reviewed are the THX certified ones in THX mode).
