Im pretty nuch decided on the Panasonics but am stuck one which one to go for please help

Regardless of price which set is better?

I understand the 700 only got 4 stars in its recent review but i believe this was down to price difference and the actual gain didnt warrent the difference in cost

Looking at the recent prices and there are some keen prices flying around, the gap is not so great. So take price out of it, which set would i be best going for?

I will be using with the following equipment:

Onkyo SR705 (so sound quality between the two set wont be an issue), SKY+, Blue-ray through PS3 and HD DVD through Toshiba HD EP35

a couple of other queries i have:

i see the contrast on the 700 is claimed at 5000:1 and the 70 is 10000:1 i assumed this would be the other way around, therefore which set produces the better blacks?

currently i run all picture throught the Onkyo, sky+ using s-video to the amp and then obviously HDMI from amp to tv, am i loosing out on picture quality this way> and would i be better going RGB scart direct to tv and just taking the sound to the AMP

Many Thanks

I think that you would be better off buying the PZ70 rather than the PZ700, because I believe it has better picture quality due to the higher contrast ratio. This means better reproduction of colours, especially blacks. Also, the PZ70 will accept a 24fps signal. You cannot rely on the PZ700 to do this, even though in some cases people claim they have managed to get the tv to accept a 24fps source. This is nowhere in the specification.

I know it seems strange that the less expensive PZ70 outperforms the premium priced PZ700, and I'm not sure why this is the case, although it may be because the PZ70 is a newer model than the PZ700, even if only by a few months.

As for connecting your Sky+ box to a tv, try for yourself and see which you think is best. The argument for connecting the box directly to the tv via RGB scart is that this offers the highest quality connection between tv and box, and is the purest way of transferring the signal. Plugging the box into your Onkyo amp via S-video will cause some loss of quality at that point but the advantage is that the Onkyo's video proccesing can upscale the signal and clean it up which will improve it's quality and then pass it on to the tv via HDMI with zero loss of quality between amp and tv. I hope I have been of some assistance to you.

The PZ70 & PZ700 should be identical in picture quality ... the main difference is an extra HDMI port in the side, and better speakers in the set.

correct me if I'm wrong,

cheers

My mistake ... sort of. Here in Denmark it seems we have a panel from Panasonic TH-42PZ700E - which has a contrast ratio of 10000:1. (http://www.panasonic.dk:80/servlet/PB/menu/1249616_l14/index.html). I did not think the panel in the UK would be of a different spec, any one have any idea why this is the case?
