It'll apparently offer even better black levels.

There will certainly be selling points that appeal to videophiles (I'm guessing Panny will work to eradicate near black uniformity problems, and a flat screen will appeal).

Given such potential advantages, why issue a claim that it'll go blacker than previous OLEDs? The race to absolute black has already been won.

I read it as improvements over gradations just above black.

Anyway, they need to create publicity for Joe Public.

There are claims of improved near-black performance, but the article also states that the Panasonic appears to go blacker than an unnamed rival's OLED TV, which doesn't make sense.

Oh well, as you say, this wouldn't be the first example of marketing assertions that are divorced from reality.

I would assume it's a new filter to reduce the influence of ambient light levels. Can't go blacker than "off", but normal folks don't watch in pitch black conditions so rarely see those zero blacks.

Im more curious about Samsungs QLED tech, potential for zero blacks and crazy bright HDR fun.
