Panasonic 3D Comb - What is it and what does it do?

I've spotted this option tucked away in one of the menus of my Panasonic TXL37G10. The manual is less than helpful. Any idea what it actually does?

It does seem to sharpen up the picture on my DVDs and reduce most of the dot crawl that I was getting. I don't remember this option ening in the menu when I first bought the TV. Maybe Panasonic have performed a software update on the TV?
