Food for thought from Edward Zwick (producer of films inc. Shakespeare in Love, Defiance and Blood Diamond).

While discussing HD at an industry event last night, he said: "Far more of the Academy's members will have voted based on watching the movies in their living rooms than in movie-theaters. Especially when they're judging technical categories - like cinematography - the arrival of HD has made all the difference".

He did, however, go on to say he wished more people got to see movies on the really big screen.....

I'd argue that having a proper setup at home would be as good if not better than the cinema.

Plus no annoying kids, phones or pop-corn munching :p

the_lhc:this might seem like a funny question but why does that worry you particularly? Can't see how it really affects anyone of us round here, so why worry about it?

Piratecy affects all of us as the more they scam off of the ligitimate sales the less profit the rightfull owner makes thus in turn kepping official BD prices high and lowering future investment into movies.

Prsonally it sickens me when you see people more than happy enough to part with their money for bootleg copies of movies most of which are shot with a Video camera then tell people at work that the "quality" of said DVD was excellent.

Hmm, I've yet to see any convincing proof of that to be honest.

and lowering future investment into movies.

And definitely not that! I think I'd be right in saying that UK Cinemas took more in 2008 than the previous year, so it doesn't seem to be having that much of an impact (don't know about US figures). I don't think there's anything like the number of people using pirate movies as compared to music, I think the download times are still too much for most users and your average user doesn't generally understand bittorrent and stuff like that anyway.

Personally it sickens me when you see people more than happy enough to part with their money for bootleg copies of movies most of which are shot with a Video camera then tell people at work that the "quality" of said DVD was excellent.

I don't think I've ever met anyone who actually bought a bootleg movie, the only ones I've ever seen have been downloads and I don't know too many people doing that either (the last person was the IT Director at my last place of work as it happens! That was kind of worrying...).
