Hi all, i was wondering if i could get some feedback on my system, arcam cd73t & A65+ B&W 602(s3) chord cobra3, chord odyssey4 s/cables. Im also running a sony 1200es s/sound amp with b&w 601(s3) for the rears (a65 & 602 conected for the fronts)

1.What would be the weak link(s) in this system?

2.Any upgrade sugestions?

3.start afresh?

Im happy to go down the s/h route, i listen to a bit of everything kings of leon, snow patrol, neil diamond, dido, opera, pop etc etc

there are no good local hifi shops so auditioning is a problem.

i would be gratfull for any thoughts.

The strongest part of your system is the CD player, which is very good.

What do you want to change about the sound? What don't you like about your present system?

There are no weak links as such. The whole system seems well balanced, as Matthew said depends on the sound you're searching for? I suppose if you don't want to spend shed-loads on upgrading and you're looking to 'ginger' the system up, then bi-amping a power amp would be logical. Oddly enough, there's a P80 on ebay at present and I think it's coming to a close fairly soon.

Hi thanks for the reply, i do like the sound but i want to get as close to hifi nirvana as i can any ideas dich the amp/ speaker?

One persons nirvana is another's hell! crikey, this hobby is sooooo subjective. Can you describe what your nirvana is?

matthewpiano:If its an all-round improvement you are looking for I'd suggest swapping the A65+ for a used A32, and then adding a P35 power amp.

A32 + power amp sounds great, although the OP will need to upgrade the speakers to make the most of the dynamics and extra oomph the A32 deserves.

Or an A85 from Ebay (under £300), if the A32 is too dear. That could always be improved by adding a P85.

(As an aside, I've never had a chance to compare the A85 to the FMJ range, but a dealer told me yesterday that the difference between the A85 and the FMJ A38 is not massive. I wonder whether anyone has compared those?)

Right, I'll give it a go!

Adding a P75 or P80 will give improved bass. The addition of a power amp cleans the signal path, resulting in tauter bass, better detail, and overall gives the whole set-up extra lift. And that should be achieved with your existing speakers.

If you want to up the anti, then go for A85 + P85, or A32 + P35, but you'll need better speakers to fully appreciate the additional expense. The CDP is wonderful (slightly biased view

), if you choose the latter set-up, I would suggest upgrading the CDP to a s/hand 192. Depends how far you want to take the system?

Thats given me a bit of food for thought, a power amp may be the way forward! if i was to go for the A85/A32 option what sort of speakers do you recomend? thanks for your advice.

I'm assuming standmounted speakers. The natural partner to Arcam is Monitor Audio. The minimum would be the GR 10's, which I've heard when I purchased the RS6's. They are wonderfully clear, crisp and highly detailed, but if you like the speaker to 'rock 'n' roll', they aren't the best.

Alternateves would be PMC DB1is, Ruark Sabre III's, ATC SCM11's or Spendor S3E's.

SGman:what are your RS6's like?

Sweet! for the money, there's very little to complain about; very good detail, dynamic, immensely punchy and the mid-range is smooth. To add to the plus points, they hold their sound fairly close to the wall, too.

Any negatives? of course: they sound fantastic when playing blockbuster film, but MA have a reputation for this anyway. However, with certain types of music, when cranked up, can sound a tad heavy-handed.
