hi i recently had a topic about getting some new speakers to replace my mission m31i's as im looking now for some floorstanders. someone suggested i look for some mission 752's (i think it was 752's) as they can be found cheap on ebay for around the 100-150 pound mark. however i dont like the way they look. they also suggested the q acoustics 1050's at the 200 pound mark but im hoping to spend less then that and even if i wanted to spend that amount iv seen the kef iq5's on ebay for 200.

so i figured id go with the idea of older speakers. it doesnt matter how old as long as there good quality can deliver nice bass but are still clear with vocals (obviously as clear as budget speakers can get anyways) as i can hopefully grab a bargain on ebay but dont really know where to start. i did look for some wharfedale diamond 8.3's but could only find one set on pickup only half way accross the country

so anyone got any suggestions?

The Mission 752 and 753s are awesome value for money second-hand. I personally think you won't get better for that sort of money. Look for the wood-veneer finishes rather than black ash, and you can always keep the grilles on!

I'll also add that they're very well built, and the looks will grow on you with time. But then I like my speakers to look like they mean business- hence my 753s...

Keep your eyes peeled for MA BR5s as well, seen some at pretty good prices!

Shame you don't like 752s as I'm selling mine shortly. You should consider the Ruark Talisman IIs. Rated very highly, frequently for sale and about the price you're looking at. If you're buying speakers at that sort of price it won't make financial sense to pay for postage so I'd look for models which are frequently available (then there's a higher chance of something in your area).

I want to stay on the side of the WHF forum rules and not progress anything here. I'll be putting them for sale on another girly-coloured forum over the next ten days - I'm sure Google will help out!

I think it'll have been me who recommended the 752s and the Q Acoustics 1050i - true, you can buy the KEFs for about the same price on Ebay, but then the IQ5 doesn't have the scale that would go with your music which the Q's have with room to spare, nor were they Hi Fi World's speaker (or Product) of the year last year.

If it's looks AND sound quality you're after, then it depends on what your tastes are and what you're likely to get for the money. No doubt there'll be something out there, but without knowing the kind of style you want, it's hard to say. I would point you towards another Mission set, the 733i (which I also had a pair of for a decade or so) and would rate those well too. You'll get a pair in good nick for under £100 and they'll handle all types of music pretty well.

Mine wasn't over the moon when my 'new' Crusader IIs arrived - a bit size jump over the 752s (more than I'd realised myself to be honest). My main instruction was that they needed to be a dark wood (I got the new ones in walnut but it's not quite as nice/dark as the missions' rosewood) as she thinks anything light looks too Ikea/studenty
