Old vs New?!

Hi folks. I'm torn between buying a turntable to connect to my hi-fi or use an old hi-fi with turntable. I have my Dad's 23 yr old Pioneer XD-Z62T with PL-Z82 turntable and original speakers. I currently use a Panasonic SA-PM18 mini hi-fi (which I think is surprisingly good) and would connect an Ion Profile turntable. The Pioneer sounds great, is loud and saves me buying the Ion but is massive and I can't convert vinyl to mp3. I can convert on the Panasonic with Ion but am worried I might compromise the volume and sound quality of the Pioneer, and it seems such a waste to not use it.

Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated thanks.

You can, there are any number of standalone phono stages (I'm assuming the Pioneer TT doesn't have phono built in) that include a USB connection for plugging into a PC to "rip" the audio. I've got one (a Pro-Ject), paid about 70 quid for it, although I think they're slightly more than that now.

You should be, those Ions aren't very good.

Thanks for that, no the pioneer TT doesn't have phono out so I either get a USB TT to use with the panasonic or use the old pioneer and not convert. I dont want to keep the pioneer and have a second TT for converting!

Sorry, I wasn't very clear, I actually meant a phono stage rather than the connectors but in that case how does it connect to the main unit?

Hey, no worries, I got a bit confused myself there! TT does have phono cables to connect to the unit but also has a power cable connecting to the unit so it can't be used separately. And (excuse my lack of knowledge), I'm not sure what a phono stage is.

I've set up the old Pioneer now, it seems sound quality and volume has won the battle over size and mp3 conversion! I mainly want to convert my Rush vinyl but I've found that I can buy them on CD for a few quid each anyway.

Thanks for your advice matey.
