I know digital is relatively new when compared with analog music. A lot of products are very mature technology. Maybe DACs/cd players etc may still have a little improvment potential etc.

Are amps, speakers, turntables and indeed cd players/dacs etc better now than say 15 years ago. If one bought a smilar specced/priced product now, would it likely be better than the 15 year old one (when it was new)

The difference is smaller than will be ever admitted by those who have a vested interest in making and selling you new kit. It's like laundry detergents. They've improved so much every few years that 50 years ago they must have been making our clothes dirtier.

Materials, aesthetics, manufacturing quality, efficiency, functionality and reliability are probably better ... but whether they sound better? Can't really answer that. What worries me about a lot of stuff you can buy today is whether they will work as well in 2, 5 or 10 years time because the software services they rely on won't be kept up to date.

Look up tin whiskering and ROHS for just one reason why your new amp won't last 40 years like your grandad's did.

Nice one. Also consider most analogue kite from the past was built to a design using the best possible components rather than built to a budget as many are today. There was real competition back then as the market was smaller, now it's purely economics.

I have a 1990s Pioneer A300R which, to me and my son, sounds far better than his 2 year old Marantz 5005.
In fact even my 1980s NAD 3020 sounds better.

And I wonder why. That amp is a reknown classic much overlooked by those that profess the A400 to be the dogs dangle bits.

That's just replying to your first post. ;-)
