Am excited just bought an Arcam Delta 250 CD transport to go with my Black Box 50. I was using a Rotel RCD02 for a while which was a bit dry sounding when I compared it to my old Arcam Alpha CD, unfortunately my Alpha has developed an electrical buzz. So I can't wait to hear my old new to me transport. Apparently the synch lock provides better sound. Hooray for second hand gear at reasonable prices.

This was my first taste of decent hifi, many years ago I picked one up for 30 quid. Had it a few years then gave it away, not realising just how good a piece of kit it was.

Needless to say, I wish I had kept it. But I agree, if it wasn't for second hand hifi at silly prices, I would still be listening to a technics midi system.

We grew up with an 8track, reel to reel, then a Binatone system. So glad times have changed.

Yes the Alpha is a great player, had it about 25 years.

I'm on the lookout for another old amp ... I have £400 to spend but am taking my time. I have earmarked a few that I'm keen on and waiting for one of those to be listed on ebay or gumtree

I'm also looking at spending approx £120 for an old amp or receiver to connect to my laptop for spotify

I totally agree with you BryO and Bigfish. Buying second hand makes a lot of sense.

I agree, with the caveat that second hand equipment can be a bit of a minefield for the uninitiated. It sort of relies on you already knowing what you're doing and what you're looking for. But armed with that information, you'll always get for more for your money than buying used, except in the case of embyonic or developing technologies that haven't matured.

dim_span, I'd be looking out for 1970's to 1990's Japanese battleship amps for that sort of money as well as big bruiser professional amps from that era for £120 and £400 budgets.

I'd be checking German ebay as well as UK.

Yup ... I want a Japanese one with lots of silver switches and knobs and that that weighs over 20kg

Just waiting for the right price ... I am checking the German ebay site aswell

Used to own a Pioneer SA-9800 for over 10 years, but want something similar in good condition .... will use it for a few months then send it in for a recap/service and hopefully I will be able to use it for the next 10 years

same for the smaller amp for spotify .... I will most probably get a smaller version of the main amp

Arcam Delta 250 transport arrived. Looks like bloody new and sounds awesome. The synch lock facility does seem to give a much bigger sound with greater separation. Then again nothing makes any difference apparently. So I'll just sit back and enjoy this delusion.
