This phenomenon is more widespread than you would think.
Brightness related buzzing is usually a symptom of a defect/poorly designed power supply as the excess brightness puts a strain on the PSU.
This isn't restricted to flatscreens either, good old CRT sets can exhibit this as well.
Unfortunately, a lot of manufacturers these days use power stages that are "adequete" instead of a PSU specification that will perform comfortably.
Modern PSUs are under a great strain every time you turn the set on due to the high voltages needed to power the screen and some of the conventional componets inside such as capacitors will chemically deteriorate over time, contributing to eventual failure.
In saying that, a well designed set should of course give years of trouble free service, but you can be unlucky.
I am just replacing a power supply in a 60" NEC plasma at work that's just over a year old, a few weeks out of warranty unfortunately.
The powerboard is made by Sony and the video processing board is sourced from Pioneer.
Strange bedfellows indeed.
