While watching Sky with the av receiver turned off, I am unable to get pass through sound with the HD channels, SD channels work fine though.

Any ideas why?

Do you have the Sky HD box set to Dolby Digital HDMI out?

When I had the GT50, mine was the same, i.e. there was no sound from the TV with DD HDMI turned on

I rewired the HDMI lead via my Panasonic sounbar, and it sorted the problem

The new Samsung 55F8000 allows DD to pass through it straight to the soundbar, so the wiring is now less complex!

I've kind of solved the problem. The audio from the Sky box is going via the hdmi lead, so if I change it to Normal output, I can get pass through sound, but then if listen through the receiver, I have to change it back to Dolby D to get surround sound. I've tried keeping the Sky box digital output on Dolby D, and the Sky box hdmi output on Normal, and then change the input on the receiver to receive the optical sound, but I'm struggling to make this happen. :?

Why don't you use the sound system exclusively? Why do you want to use TV speakers at all?

Just to have the option really, especially for early morning and very late night viewing. Also, my wife has been moaning that she just wanted to watch tv without turning the receiver on..

I get around this by running the HDMI lead straight from my Humax box to the TV (stereo downmix output) and an optical to the receiver - as the maximum output/bitrate from Freeview HD is Dolby Digital in any case.

I'm not sure of Sky HD outputs higher resolution audio?

p.s. we clearly have the same wife

No it doesn't, Dolby Digital maximum.

Just a thought BBB, is your TV DD compatible with external sources? Perhaps the HD channels have DD soundtracks that your TV can't handle directly?

In that case the solution suggested above should solve your problem.

If we assume that the audio from the HD channels is pretty much all 5.1 then this is why your TV can't decode the raw signal. You need the amp on to decode it.

I think it should be able to handle DD, though it doesn't seem to be.

I've sorted the problem by using the optical output (set to Dolby D on the Sky box) to the receiver, and the HDMI output (set to normal on the Sky box), so I get 5.1 to the receiver, and stereo to the tv. :)

I'm pretty sure that the GT50 will not allow DD pass through, and can't handle it from Sky HD

Well, I never managed to get mine to...

Can't see the point in 5.1 to the tv anyway, so it's perfect now. :)
