Hi there i am a looking to buy a decent LCD but i'm no expert on all the techie jargon, so thought i'd turn to you lot for some expert guidance on what to look for. Firstly i have been thinking about getting a 37" LCD, but wasn't sure if it might be too big for my lounge. What is the rule of thumb, isn't it something like the telly has to be 3 to 4 times its size away for optimum viewing. Maybe a 32" would be more suitable.

Secondly i am not sure what spec TV i really need. I have been reading about 1080p, but do i really need this as at the moment as opposed to standard HD ready as i will mainly be watching standard def programs on freeview? Also i have heard that for sports such as football a 100Hz tv is definately preferable to eliminate motion blur, is this a necessity or a luxury. I have no Blu Ray player or console at the mo, but will probably invest in at least 1 in the future so i want it to cope with everything i throw at it. I'm looking at spending £400 - £700, so can anyone recommend something to me?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the Panasonic TH37PX80 will suit you. Great for SD and football, no motion blur, 100Hz, and under £600. Best Buy 37" set on this site.

And I think the Free 5 year Panasonic Warranty deal ends at the end of this month so be quick about it

Hey El Guapo. Yeah the distance you will sit from the TV is important... I would say at least three times the width of the screen. Ive recently upgraded from a 32" to a 37" Samsung and whilst ive been blown away by bluray, hd dvd and games theres no getting away from the fact that standard def (normal tv or normal sky) isnt as good quality on the bigger screen... anything above 32" will magnify the imperfection. It all depends on what you use it for most. As for 1080p... this will certainky serve you well in the future with planned purchases but it ll only really come into its own over 32"... 720p was ample resolution on my 32" and everything I put on it still looked wicked. 100hz is a matter of taste.. the newer screens cope better with sport regardless in my opinion. I bought a Samsung LE37a656 and I love it. Maybe check that out and the 32" version and see how you feel. The latest sonys are pretty awesome too. Hope that helps!

Hi there,

I have been in the market to buy a TV and i was also contemplaiting between Panasoni and Sony - i believe they are the only contenders in the LCD world between the 500 - 1500£ range.. IMO

Due to your budget i would go for the Pani 37" - have a look around the web as there are great deals around..

The great Plasma TH37PX80 you can get for £525 easily at Electrical Deals.

I personally would go LCD - and try and choose the TX-37LZD85 and if you can stretch your budget to £741 from pixmania it is yours.

or the top of the range TX-37LZD800 at £870 from Richersound.

I hope you find your TV soon.

Ben
