Long time reader, first time poster etc... please excuse the noobaciousness.
I'm trying to get to grips with some stuff to put together a MyFirstHifi (if you exclude a disco-flashing Sony monstrosity) and I'd appreciate any input.
I'm not too fussed on inputs at this stage - I run all my music from my ipod, and I get music from CDs that I encode myself (i.e. not from iTunes) so I can rip in whatever quality I need to - lossless included.
Hopefully this takes out the need for a CD player, which might help me boost the budget on the other stuff.
So far I've come up with the following, taking into account my fondness for thermionic valves (guitar amp enthusiast) and the fact I don't need big volume - its not for a huge room.
Fatman 182 amp with ipod dock
B&W 685s
Apollo A4 stands
QED Qunex 2 interconnects
QED Silver Anniversary XT speaker cable (maybe biwire..maybe not, I don't whether it makes a big difference)
I've auditioned the 182 already (regretably, not with those speakers, they're a hard combo to find together at one dealer) and love the sound, though I must admit I've not heard the likes of entry-level Rotel, Roksan kit etc.
Has anyone matched this combo up or something similar? The amp is only 18W power output - any idea if this is a problem with the speakers? The fatman distributor told me they run that amp with Roksan FR5 and Dynaudio Audience 62s, so I'm thinking that if it drives those it'll drive the smaller 2-way B&W...but I'm not sure I fully understand the concepts involved
